Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger no doubt sees himself as the modern version of Pat Brown, the 1960s-era governor whose bold infrastructure programs literally paved the way for the state's prosperous and growing future. Our current governor has passed or proposed a series of admittedly bold programs: $43.3 billion in infrastructure bonds on top of the $42 billion recently passed by voters, new emissions regulations on top of the global-warming regulatory claptrap, a minimum-wage increase and now the universal health care plan he unveiled last week. But rather than building a solid foundation for the future, these programs encumber the state with dangerous new levels of debt, meddlesome new regulations and, in the latest health care debacle, massive new taxes and regulations that will knock some rungs off the business-creation ladder.
Yes, Arnold Schwarzenegger is getting a lot of the one thing he seems to care about media accolades but for many Californians his legacy will be quite disastrous.
The health care proposal is the governor's biggest and most troubling idea. ... The governor's dishonesty insisting that a 4 percent payroll tax as well as other new taxes embodied in the proposal are really fees will eliminate any leverage Republicans will have in keeping this plan under control. Legislation that increases fees does not require a two-thirds vote, whereas tax-raising legislation does. That means that the governor and Democrats will craft this bill together... Any Republican who still believes the governor is an ally needs to sign up for some government-funded mental health exams something that might pop up in next year's budget.
(snip)
I'd consider contacting the relocation specialists and moving companies sooner rather than later. Moving out of state might be far cheaper (and less aggravating) than paying for the Schwarzenegger legacy.

Heavily excerpted--this is a long editorial from Steven Greenhut, senior editorial writer and columnist.
Greenhut critiques each of the elements of the proposed universal healthcare plan pointing out that more mandates, rules, and fees will only make the situation worse.

The governor's plan will aggravate the effects of illegal immigration. And INCREASE illegal immigration. Will California be able to take half of Mexico poor?

Once this is enacted, there will be tens of millions, perhaps hundreds of millions, of people with children from all over the world entering Kalifornia, not to mention millions within the USA heading towards Kalifornia, there by speeding up the bankruptcy process exponentially.

Will California be able to take half of Mexico poor? Not to mention the illegal aliens immigrating to California from other states.

Not only Mexico, but illegals from other states.

Not only Mexico, but illegals from other states. This could be the solution. Let California absorb all illegals and then let Mexico have California. Problem solved :)

Its an attack on small business. Look for more people to leave California rather than pay the added new taxes.

If we're going to give Kalifornia to Mexico, let's be sure it's all of Kalifornia (SF and Oakland too).

The feds got us into this mess, they can get us out of it. This is genius! Pelosi, Boxer, and Feinstein would all become Mexican politicians.

Pelosi, Boxer, and Feinstein would all become Mexican politicians. And Arnold could become the president!

Moving out of state might be far cheaper (and less aggravating) than paying for the Schwarzenegger legacy. After spending much of our working careers in California, my wife and I are about to retire..IN A STATE WITHOUT AN INCOME TAX!! That's right. We are moving away. We bought a new home on an acre. It was half the cost of what we got for our home in California, and we paid in full - cash. Life will be good..outside of California. Buh-bye. And, see ya', Arnold. Good luck with that.

I think 2010 will be California's Waterloo. A real conservative Republican doesn't stand a chance.
Conservatives in California shouldn't move, however. Stay and fight for your state. Visualize the old California, where people came to dream and innovate.

This is genius! Pelosi, Boxer, and Feinstein would all become Mexican politicians. Yep--and you'd also lose the Ronald Reagan library, FreeRepublic, the Heritage Foundation, and 5 1/2 million registered Republicans (just to name a few little things).

If you don't mind me asking, what states did you find desireable in your search? (Did you have a top 5 list?) We can't leave the state now, but it's probably in the 5-year plan.
Good luck to you in your new home!
