Man files lawsuit to take wife's name

LOS ANGELES - Mike Buday isn't married to his last name. In fact, he and his fiancee decided before they wed that he would take hers. But Buday was stunned to learn that he couldn't simply become Mike Bijon when they married in 2005.

As in most other states, that would require some bureaucratic paperwork well beyond what a woman must go through to change her name when marrying.

Instead of completing the expensive, time-consuming process, Buday and his wife, Diana Bijon, enlisted the American Civil Liberties Union and filed a discrimination lawsuit against the state of California. They claim the difficulty faced by a husband seeking to change his name violates the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment.

I don't really see why the change of name is an issue. It can be performed legally via another procedure. He could bloody well call himself "Spam" and I still wouldn't have a horse in this race.

Thoughts? Does anyone care? I know... Colt over Ravens - lol!

I knew a couple who were set on swapping names. That doesn't solve what to all the kids...

Well I think he's a spineless wimp for taking his wife's name but other than that I have no opinion on it.

As I said, man takes wife's name, or woman takes husband's name, or any combination they like - I really don't care. Should be their decision, and equally easy in any case.

But I bet this guy sits down to pee.

I had always thought Major Major Major was the worst name I could give my kid, but then settled on Spam Wonderful Spam.

Since everyone except some college professors know that there is a difference between men and women, it is hardly discrimination for the law to treat them differently, therefore I hope the ACLU loses this lawsuit. After the ACLU loses then I would have no problem with the California legislature changing the law to make it easy for either the husband or wife to adopt a new name through the regular marriage process.

The only reason to consider something like this would be if you had a recognizably hideous name to begin with. Examples would be Hitler, Bin Laden, or Stalin. Otherwise this guy is beyond helpless. This marriage is doomed to fail because even when women think they want an extremely weak man, they don't.

Headline is misleading. He can change his name. It is just that the woman can do it by checking a block on the license while the man has to go through more tedious and expensive requirements.

The Mayor of Los Angeles did that. He added his wife's name to the end of his.

FTA: "Diana and I feel strongly about gender equality for both men and women," Buday said. "I think the most important thing in all of this is to bring it to a new level of awareness."

Oh, so he's one of those guys. I think his reason for doing it stinks, but so what, let him change his name.

He's not allowed to take her name by the rules because he's the man and she's supposed to take his name.

The spineless henpecked embarrasment to the gender probably wants to wear lace undies like she does too...........

Phooey. If my last name sounded like a french bathroom fixture, I'd want to change it too. But not for his silly assed reasons.
