MOSCOW, January 11 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's president Thursday harshly criticized the U.S. detention camp at Guantanamo Bay, which marked its fifth anniversary today.
Located in the southwest Cuba, the camp has been used to hold and interrogate suspected terrorists captured in a Washington-led global antiterrorism campaign.
Human rights organizations in the U.S. and worldwide have been highly critical of the facility for holding prisoners without trial and over allegations of torture.
"People have been held at the camp without trial for five years, and those released have to defend themselves in national judicial systems," Vladimir Putin said at a meeting with human rights advocates.
Out of some 700 Guantanamo inmates, about 380, including Russian nationals, have been released. The president said he could not recall any charges ever been laid against the prisoners.
"I hope a camp similar to the one at Guantanamo never appears in Russia," Putin said.
Grozny
Russia,shut up.

Putie also said that there were never any cannibals in Russia like there were in Africa.
Guess again.

Putin missed the truth here. Guatanamo holds those who was caught with weapons so as the enemy soldiers. SO thier guilt is out of questions. Those who was released are deemed innocent by Guatanamo investigators so no surprise they are not sentenced by the national judiciary systems.
Outrageous, especially coming from the thug Putin. The US should demand he open his prisons for public scrutiny....fat chance.
"I hope a camp similar to the one at Guantanamo never appears in Russia," Putin said...."I mean, I hope *another one* doesn't. Geez."
I know what he means.
How many chechens were taken alive, hmmm?
Yes, it must have been mistranslated. Did you notice it said Club Gitmo is in the southwestern part of Cuba? It's really in the southeast.
And I have trouble feeling sorry for the prisoners, since I read the menu and learned that on most days, they eat better than I do! Compared with Afghanistan, Cuba must seem like a tropical paradise, even when seen from behind bars. We haven't even converted any prisoners to Christianity, so I guess we're poor Crusaders, too.
