MOSCOW, January 11 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's president Thursday harshly criticized the U.S. detention camp at Guantanamo Bay, which marked its fifth anniversary today.
Located in the southwest Cuba, the camp has been used to hold and interrogate suspected terrorists captured in a Washington-led global antiterrorism campaign.
Human rights organizations in the U.S. and worldwide have been highly critical of the facility for holding prisoners without trial and over allegations of torture.
"People have been held at the camp without trial for five years, and those released have to defend themselves in national judicial systems," Vladimir Putin said at a meeting with human rights advocates.
Out of some 700 Guantanamo inmates, about 380, including Russian nationals, have been released. The president said he could not recall any charges ever been laid against the prisoners.
"I hope a camp similar to the one at Guantanamo never appears in Russia," Putin said.

Is he serious? ROFLMHO I guess they never thought undies on the head were harsh enough to be used for torture in Russia.
Poor President Bush.....here's another setback to his ability to "judge" friend from foe...
I guess when George looked into Putin's eyes - Putin was wearing his "Christian" contacts...
Semper Fi
Shatup, Russia, you know nothing about freedom, that is obvious.
Hey Putin, can't you catch the "flu" soon? Please, for the sake of your people as well as the US? Barring that, STFU!
This coming from a former KGB officer?
Does HE think Americans are clueless?
Hey Pootie- a lot fewer eggs have been broken in GitMo than in the Gulag. Now go back to chasing small boys.
Russia throws the book at the US on prison camp maintenance. Of course - they wrote it!
Yeah, three hots and a cot, books to read and palmy Caribbean weather.
Tough interrogation twice a week, no electrodes or bullets to the brain. Compare that with what got dealt out in Magadan. Or tell it to the 30,000 German and Italian survivors of Stalingrad, who were over 200,000 when they passed into captivity after Gen. von Paulus surrendered them.
A former KGB officer is the last man on earth who should be commenting on how we deal with POW's.
LOL! Yeah, you don't want something like GITMO to give your Gulags a bad name, pootie. After all, providing prisoners free medical care, 3 squares a day, a dry cell and a Koran to read in a tropical paradise is Western decadence.
Ruslan wrote to his mother that at Camp Delta "what we see around us is a complete miracle".
I say, let him out, give him a shave and a haircut, he's no longer a muslim, he became a human being in Gitmo!
Hilarious. This guy is a murderer and a tyrant. He should be shot.
Dear Mr Putin, I have a copy of Gulag Archipeligo Vol One and Two I would like to lend you.
You HAVE heard of Solzhenitsyn, haven't you???
LOL. Classic that is good.
Perhaps the White House should mail a copy of 'The Gulag Archipelago' to Putin.
The Leader of the future Soviet Union speaks again about Human Rights yet he runs Gulags.... What a hypocrit.
(I wonder if KGB Col. Pootie Poot will join Mother Moonbat, Dannie Ortega, Mr. Citgo Chavez, and Fidel at the protest outside of Gitmo.)
To be added or removed from this list, please FReepmail me.
Yeah but... That was Rootin Tootin Boot Scootin Putin down on the ranch not too far from Waco!!! It's danged hard to judge durin a genuwine TX BBQ, don'tcha know?
Russian jails, where inmates may be held 20 to a cell, tuberculosis is rampant and hygiene minimal, have been condemned as "deadly".
What a lying whore Putin is.
