Playboy airwoman relieved of duty
BBC ^ | 13 January 2007 | BBC

A US Air Force sergeant who appears nude in the latest edition of Playboy magazine has been stood down from duties as an investigation begins.

Michelle Manhart, 30, is pictured in a range of poses, some while wearing uniform and striking a military pose, others while stripped naked.

The air force said in a statement her actions "does not meet the high standards we expect of our airmen".

Ms Manhart said she did not expect to be disciplined and defended the photos.

Ms Manhart, who is married with two children, appears in the February issue of Playboy's US edition.

In a six-page spread she is photographed in camouflage uniform shouting and holding weapons under the headline "Tough Love".

Other pictures are more explicit.

Dismay

She defended her decision to pose for the magazine, pointing out that she works in training air force recruits and has served her country since 1994.

They picked me to train these individuals so if they elect to say I don't have [integrity] then that's their opinion

Michelle Manhart

"Of what I did, nothing is wrong, so I didn't anticipate anything, of course," she told the Associated Press.

"I didn't do anything wrong, so I didn't think it would be a major issue.

"They picked me to train these individuals so if they elect to say I don't have [integrity] then that's their opinion."

Oscar Balladares, a spokesman for Lackland Air Force Base, denounced her actions in a statement.

"This staff sergeant's alleged action does not meet the high standards we expect of our airmen, nor does it comply with the Air Force's core values of integrity, service before self, and excellence in all we do.

"It is not representative of the many thousands of outstanding airmen who serve in the US Air Force today."

A Playboy spokeswoman said two serving women have posed nude in the past, both from the navy.

One was discharged a few months early in June 2000, while the first model was honourably discharged in 1998.

"Don't you give up some rights and freedoms when you sign up with the military? You have to do what's best for the military--not what's best for you."

This is the crux, correctly and legally of the military's argument against the sort of publicity the woman gave herself; and in doing so drew that same publicity to the military. The military has a right to say that is not publicity that is commensurate with what they desire and expect from their people in uniform.

She should be discharged, and I would just hope they would use a simple administrative discharge procedure, requiring no court martial and providing a "general" discharge (which does not say "dishonorable", its says "under honorable conditions"). It is less than an "honorable" discharge in the military's eyes but it does not project the "dishonorable" connotation to future employers. It is generally the form used in administrative discharges, looked at in the military more like an amicable "divorce" between incompatiable partners.

She is a disgrace to our Military and to her family. I really do not care what someone does with their personal life but when you have children and are a member of the military there comes time when it is not all about you.

I have seen the effects of bad behavior by parents on kids and it is not good.

What does it say about us when we are making jokes and encourage this type of behavior? Shame on us.

13 years and only an E5 is not real high on the intelligent chart.

In my experience:

I knew some career E6s from the AF, so a 13 year E5 isn't that unusual. haven't had much dealings with AF types lately, so maybe things have changed.

all that said, she looks in outstanding shape, but should be separated for conduct detrimental to good order and discipline. she put her wants and desires ahead of the Air Force, and they won't like that.

The news report this morning showed NO pictures of her in uniform AND never even mentioned that fact. Can you have a side job when you're in the service?? Or is she reserve.

"I spent a third of my life in the AF living underground"

I too have worked in a windowless office setting, it is no cakewalk.

I recall a situation a few years ago where three AF Females were punished for dancing at a "Mens Club." The supporters of this argued it was very tastefull; they never stripped down to less than the equivelant of a "bikini."

One was a SSgt (E-5) and the other two were SrA (E-4). The SSgt supervised several male and female Airmen.

Amazingly; there were a lot of people who couldn't seem to comprehend why there might be a problem with this NCO's subordinants stuffing dollar bills into her underwear.

Oh well; Chris Rock said it best - "Fathers; your job is to keep your daughter off the pole!"

At his advanced age, I don't think there'll even be an HONORABLE discharge.

LOL, best post out here.

"She must want out of the AF."

That's what I think....she knows she'll be kicked out, and in today's America, there won't be any consequences. Hefner will reward her finacially as well.

Posing for a jerk off rag is slutty behavior.

Oh, I don't know about that. In my opinion posing for Playboy isn't remotely slutty. On the other hand hanging around a bar, drinking, and hitting on Nathan Zachary would be slutty.

I doubt she would do you and that indicates to me she's not a slut.  You doubt it too, but to you that makes her a slut.  Strange isn't it?

Now now, be nice!:P I saw her pic on another thread. For someone only thirty, she sure had a lotta tire tracks on her forehead. Can't HELP but notice those!
I just can't give any respect or credibility to a woman who sells herself like that.
