Giuliani dismisses pro-gay views as irrelevant to presidential bid

Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani on Thursday dismissed his liberal social views--including support for gay rights--his divorces, and his former aide’s imbroglio as irrelevant to a presidential bid.

Asked about a leaked political strategy memo that cited such issues as potentially insurmountable obstacles to a campaign for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, Giuliani said, "That is not going to be the issue."

"I sure have strengths and weaknesses," Giuliani said on ABC’s Good Morning America. "I think that sort of puts me in the same category as just about everybody else that’s running. Are my strengths greater or my weaknesses worse? I don’t know. You have to sort of examine that. That won’t be the issue."

Giuliani, who formed a presidential exploratory committee last year, said he is still weighing whether to run for president. "You have to feel inside yourself there is something special I can do-some kind of special experience I have had or background," said Giuliani, who became known as "America’s mayor" for his response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Giuliani made headlines last week when a copy of his nascent campaign’s strategy paper made its way to the New York Daily News. Aides claimed the 140-page document was pilfered from a piece of luggage when a staffer changed planes. The document acknowledged the obvious: a moderate Republican who has supported abortion rights, gay rights, and gun control may be a tough sell to GOP primary voters.

It also cited his stormy divorce from Donna Hanover, one of his former wives, and his ties to scandal-plagued former New York City police chief Bernard Kerik as potential obstacles.

Surely you are not under the mistaken illusion that the MSM is with Republicans on tax cuts, the war, judicial nominees, or virtually any other issue are you? And I think you're wrong about McCain, CFR, environmental issues, the terrorists bill of rights and the judicial gang he formed in the Senate are just a few of the issues that endear McCain to the left.

I'll say again, I'm not advocating that you support Rudy. I'm pointing out that he holds some conservative positions and from what I know of him so far, he'd be an articulate, effective advocate. But the election is a long way off...I'll measure the political landscape against those running as time goes on.

I don't see Rudy being any different on the environment than McCain. Both favor a "comprehensive immigration" policy. I view Giuliani to the left of McCain on most social issues (gay rights, abortion - including the partial birth variety - etc.). One of the advantages Rudy has is what he lacks: a voting record.

GOP members like Rudy and McCain used to be referred to as "Rockafeller Republicans." Now they are simply called RINOs.

I would agree with you that Rudy seems to be the left of McCain on social issues, that is if I could trust McCain. I would also agree that those positions cast him in the mold of a so called Rockefeller Republican. I don't think that is true, from what I have read and heard from him so far, that he fits that mold when it comes to economic/social welfare policies.

Time will tell. And with that, I'm off for the night :)

"If we're all blown to bits, beheaded, or glowing from a nuke attack, none of our social concerns will be of the utmost importance."

The United States Constitution is no "social issue".

"These issues were intended to be left to the separate and sovereign states."

The states are no longer separate or sovereign. Not for nearly a century. A state today is no more than a very large county. Not when the federal government regulates everything down to the individual household, and federal judges direct how states may tax and what they must spend it on.

Well..that's news to me Mr. Hamilton...

Not when the federal government regulates everything down to the individual household, and federal judges direct how states may tax and what they must spend it on.

So instead of electing candidates that would begin the return to a Federal Republic, we should elect idiots that push 'our' way nationwide before the other guy does. How 'conservative'

"Well..that's news to me Mr. Hamilton..."

I'm not debating what the law says or the Founders intended, just the reality of federal control these days.

"So instead of electing candidates that would begin the return to a Federal Republic, we should elect idiots that push 'our' way nationwide before the other guy does. How 'conservative'"

We're on the same side, billbears. Reserve your ire for the Rudy supporters.

I AM serious.

He is too weak to face what the world will bring to the USA in the next presdential term. North Korea, Iran, all with nuclear weapons. What is Rudy going to do? Play Mayor with them? He hasn't got the guts or the experience.

Hey Mojo, Thanks for putting me on to Hunter. For the first time, I like what I see in a Republican candidate:

"Hunter was born in Riverside, California. He briefly attended the University of Montana and the University of California, Santa Barbara before enlisting in the United States Army. He served in the Vietnam War in the 173rd Airborne Brigade and the 75th Army Rangers. After leaving the Army, he enrolled at Western State University College of Law and earned a BSL and JD in 1976. He then worked as a plaintiff's attorney."( WIKI)

I like this guy, at first glance. I will read up on him.

Many men dressed in drag? See if you can find a photo of Ronald Reagan, or Theodore Roosevelt dressed in drag.

No Giulliani dressed in drag because it was a political move. That IS the point. He's a media whore, and ideologically challenged. He would dress up in nothing but a banana warmer and stride through Central Park, for photo ops, just to get more votes from a "cool" constituency.

He's a flip flop politician.

Rudy is too weak to be POTUS.
