Giuliani dismisses pro-gay views as irrelevant to presidential bid

Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani on Thursday dismissed his liberal social views--including support for gay rights--his divorces, and his former aide’s imbroglio as irrelevant to a presidential bid.

Asked about a leaked political strategy memo that cited such issues as potentially insurmountable obstacles to a campaign for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, Giuliani said, "That is not going to be the issue."

"I sure have strengths and weaknesses," Giuliani said on ABC’s Good Morning America. "I think that sort of puts me in the same category as just about everybody else that’s running. Are my strengths greater or my weaknesses worse? I don’t know. You have to sort of examine that. That won’t be the issue."

Giuliani, who formed a presidential exploratory committee last year, said he is still weighing whether to run for president. "You have to feel inside yourself there is something special I can do-some kind of special experience I have had or background," said Giuliani, who became known as "America’s mayor" for his response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Giuliani made headlines last week when a copy of his nascent campaign’s strategy paper made its way to the New York Daily News. Aides claimed the 140-page document was pilfered from a piece of luggage when a staffer changed planes. The document acknowledged the obvious: a moderate Republican who has supported abortion rights, gay rights, and gun control may be a tough sell to GOP primary voters.

It also cited his stormy divorce from Donna Hanover, one of his former wives, and his ties to scandal-plagued former New York City police chief Bernard Kerik as potential obstacles.

He's got name recognition and a generally good reputation with national voters. He'd make a good VP (running mate) on those merits IMO. I can't see him winning the nomination for President.

Giuliani said, "That is not going to be the issue."

How about 2nd Amendment issues, Rudy? Better shape up on those.

Isn't he also for Bush style amnesty, and just plain boring?

Rudy will find that abortion, homosexual marriages/civil unions, gun control, stem cell research from aborted infants and other issues will be a major problem for him.

What Giuliani has going for him is that the other GOP candidates are no better on those issues, and worse on others, with the exception of Duncan, who is pretty much a dark horse.

Giulliani is too weak to be Commander in Chief.Weak minded, weak ideology, and weak kneed.

He has the staying power of a chameleon. Just ask his 3 wives.

Good one, Saganite.

What is with these people? .......

No, I didn't do that....No, I didn't say that....What I really meant was.....

I had some respect for this person, until this.

JAFRINO - Just Another Friggin' RINO.

Hey Rudy, you are not a Republican, not with those documented positions.

Nice try.

D***Head.

Can we expect the lib media to continue waving the bloody shirt of 9/11 on Giuliani's behalf?

Good grief. Doesn't this man know that, outside of his beloved New York and the left coast, this issue alone will kill him. Start with the south for instance, he can't win without the south. The south will never vote for anyone supporting queer marriage.

Name a state outside of Massachussets that has voted for a queer marriage referendum.

Rudy, you are in the wrong party.

Say it ain't so, Joe. He has way to much baggage. Maybe he should change parties. His dog won't hunt where I live.

How about 2nd Amendment issues, Rudy? Better shape up on those.

There IS no last minute, final hour, 4th quarter "shaping up" on core CONSTITUTIONAL issues of national importance like our 2nd Amendment.

ALL of our leaders should support the 2nd Amendmet UNEQUIVOCALLY, or they SHOULD NOT be allowed to be anything more than the local dog catcher.

Any voter who trusts such a "Johnny come lately" with their prescious vote... is a fool.

Just say NO to any and all RINOs.

Yep, many gun owners (including yours truly) aren't inclinded to believe last-minute "conversions."

But my point was that he has no chance whatsoever of winning the nomination unless he comes out strong for individual gun rights.

Just say NO to any and all RINOs.

That's why, as it now stands, I'm supporting Duncan Hunter. -- "A" rating from the tough-grading GOA.

This should be a fun thread. I doubt if I will participate much, however. Beating the drum until it has no sound, just isn't my bag.

I saw Duncan Hunter (talking about the two Border Patrol agents) on Glenn Beck last night and was very impressed. He seems like the common man (without coming across as another Gomer Pile).
