COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) - Angered by the passage of a bill to increase the federal minimum wage, Idaho Congressman Bill Sali offered a symbolic proposal to abolish the law of gravity.
Getting rid of the pesky force that attracts objects to one another would lower obesity rates, the freshman Republican argues.
Sali says he was trying to make a point that laws to dictate wages and reduce gravity would both defy - quote- "natural laws."
The House voted 315-116 to raise the federal minimum wage to $7.25 an hour. Sali responded with his "Obesity Reduction and Health Promotion Act."
Sali says "Obviously, it was a facetious notion to suspend the laws of gravity."
Sali voted against the increase in the minimum wage, saying it's not tied to how much someone's work is worth.

Why does it take being kicked out of power for republicans to grow spines? Cong. Sali is a freshman. He just got there.
He gives me hope for the future.

And I guess Rep. Sali would also say the 30 million dollar parachute packages are just like gravity -- natural. Greed is natural. So is the need for people to actually make enough money to feed, clothe, and house themselves. It always surprises me to find folks on FR who think like you do.
The minimum wage is a joke. It acts more as a wage ceiling than it does a wage floor. And in fact, it is much more about union contracts that are tied to the minimum wage than it does to actually helping "the working poor."
Increasing the minimum wage is a financial payoff by Democrats to their union supporters. That's the truth.

Unfortunately, the law of supply and demand is obviously too obscure for Democrats and a good portion of the American electorate these days.

So is the need for people to actually make enough money to feed, clothe, and house themselves. The 30 million dollar parachute packages are PRIVATE contracts reached between 2 consenting entities. Just as ANY job's salary is. If you don't like $5 and hour, don't accept the job. Governement has NO place dictating salary terms between a worker and an employee!

Personally, I would have repealed a law closer to the topic at had, such as the law of supply and demand. That would have made the point clearer, I think. You're assuming that more than 10% of the population understands the law of supply and demand. Remember, to the democrats, supply and demand translates into tax and spend -- they demand more social programs, taxpayers supply the money.

I was speaking in general. But it is very refreshing and hopeful to me as well. Since most of the RINOS in congress and senate have either been purged or are so old that they will retire between 2008 and 2012, if we can get some good fresh young and conservative blood in there we can take back both houses and have a CONSERVATIVE majority as a posed to a RINO majority.
They can't pull the "well we have to back them (RINOS) because they are the only 'Electable' ones" (something I my self bought into) any more after 2006 as almost all the pubs kicked out were RINOS and old school moderates. And as a plus, if only 1/5 of the so called "Blue Dog" democrats end up being conservative that would only enhance any majority we get in the coming years.

Congress is like a miniature version of FR. You might hear almost anything in Congress, and it would have been seen on FR many times already.

LOL...if you did that, how would Dick Morris ever triangulate again?

I'm glad you're "Eternally Vigilant". I've grown tired of trying to explain basic economics to those who prefer feeling over thinking and empty platitudes over results.
I truly fear for the future of our country.

Apparently, they're proving themselves unworthy of our trust.

I suspect the Donk's will take this out of context and use it against him.

I myself have worked for minimum wage and I can tell you one thing for sure, there is no greater motivator to stay in school and go to college then cleaning up after pigs in a movie theater for $5.15 per hour.

I suspect the Donk's will take this out of context and use it against him. RINOs too. Liberals in both parties hate Bill Sali's guts.

I like that. Pi = 3.0 would indeed make calculations much easier.
To: rellimpank
"pi" as "three" would end a lot of confusion IIRC one state actually passed legislation along those lines about 100 years ago.
