Explosions Rocks U.S. Embassy in Athens
Associated Press
Friday, January 12, 2007
ATHENS, Greece - Police cordoned off streets around the U.S. Embassy in Athens early Friday after an explosion inside the embassy compound.
Authorities searched nearby apartment buildings and a hospital amid reports that an explosive device may have been fired at the building. The blast smashed glass in the front of the building, near the U.S. emblem of the embassy.
"I heard a loud bang I didn't realize what was going on," said Giorgos Yiannoulis, who runs a kiosk near the embassy.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Greeces biggest domestic security threat, the leftist November 17 guerrilla group, which had in the past killed US and other foreign diplomats in Greece, was dismantled in 2002.
In November last year, Greek riot police fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators marching to the US Embassy in Athens who chanted slogans including Bush the butcher, out of Iraq and The USA is the real terrorist."

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The al-Qaeda is the usual suspect, but the authorities are also speculating that it may have been a fall out of the manner in which former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was executed in December 2006."
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "However, at the moment the authorities are not even sure whether the explosive was planted inside the building or if it was the result of a rocket propelled from a moving vehicle, aimed towards the embassy."
The US embassy is among the best-guarded buildings in the Greek capital.
AN RPG attack might be the only way to generate an explosion...
That's just weird.

Thanks for that update.
No injuries.

Rocket propelled grenade -- no injuires.
I wonder who did this thing.
OPINION: Greece has a mix of possibilities.
N17, AQ, anarchists, other local protesters, etc.
Nice pyrotechnics in your graphic.
It is the most logical explanation. The Embassy does not have much of a setback from a main street and the compound is surrounded by taller buildings. The possibility of someone planting explosives inside the building is highly unlikely.
Thank you for that ... was not aware of it.
I thought about that for a long time using a number of graduated frames
Finally put the photo to use
It works best as a 2-frame .gif with a fast delay speed like that
A "flicker" effect
Nobody claiming credit yet? No loss of life = failure.
Yes, and in this case, my money oh who is the perp, is NOT on al Qaeda.
Excellent point.
You're probably right, but it's too soon to tell.
Given the time of day, the attack was not meant to cause loss of life. It sounds more like an N17 attack than AQ. Although the Greeks say that N17 has been dismantled, supposedly before the Olympics, there has always been the belief among us that high level Greek officials were involved. They may be behind the attack, which may be linked to our annoucement of troop increases in Iraq or what is happening in Kosovo. The Greeks have always been supportive of the Serbs.
