Bush's way forward may be sensible. But his face showed fearand that's no way to rally a war-weary nation.
George W. Bush spoke with all the confidence of a perp in a police lineup. I first interviewed the guy in 1987 and began covering his political rise in 1993, and I have never seen him, in public or private, look less convincing, less sure of himself, less cocky. With his knitted brow and stricken features, he looked, well, scared. Not surprising since what he was doing in the White House library was announcing the escalation of an unpopular war.
The president may well be right that we cannot afford to leave or lose in Iraq . He makes profound sense when he observes that a collapse of Iraq would mean the rise of a giant version of the Taliban's Afghanistanwith a million times the oil in the ground.

I missed all the BS analysis and based on this looks like I did myself a favor
Fineman ain't so fine. I didn't see the speech but I can almost guarantee Fineman made this up out of whole cloth.
to be honest, to me he looked scared in the 2003 address on the night of the invasion...don't get me wrong, I'd probably look like Barney Fife, announcing something like that...W is so much better in a casual setting.....screw the impression...its all a PR game right up until the laser guided bomb hits you in the head....GO USA!!!!!
my thought is he isnt trying to rally a nation ...he is trying to do whats right
What does this face show?
Someone trying really really hard to look serious and focused.
Great speech. There are links on these boards where it can be read.
Take the time if you missed it.
It says, " I am a dork pretending to be really really smart"
I saw the speech and I saw Durbin Durbaning ....missed all the rest.
Here is the link to the transcript. On the same page there is a link to the video. His speech was about 20 minutes long.
It was a serious, measured speech. If he had been more emphatic, he would have been accused of being a cowboy. You know that some people will bash Bush, no matter what.

Bless his heart, he is "damned if he does and damned if he doesn't". He has been ridiculed for being out of touch or lying when he appears confident that the war is being and will be won. Now he is being criticized for trying to set a tone of just how serious the situation is. He was showing by his demeanor that we MUST win this battle of the war against Islamofascism! I did not think that he looked afraid and I have no doubt that he believes the path that he laid out is the right thing to do.
I said he was trying, not succeeding. My dog sometimes looks pretty smart and focused when I'm holding a treat.
lol
The simple matter is the liberals control the purse strings and the media now. The 'rats can hold back funding and bitch and moan, and their megaphone is the "journalists" like Fineman who amplify their liberal, defeatist, appeasement point of view.
i DO like girls. i DO like girls. i DO like girls
who the hell am i kidding
"If he had been more emphatic, he would have been accused of being a cowboy."
VERY good point. However, not sure if it was because I was looking at it on the computer or what, but he came across as one of those late-night history teachers on the PBS channel. It may have been the room he spoke from with the bookcase etc. Perhaps that was the idea - I know lots of work goes into planning these speeches. Books, history, knowledge, reserved, measured, etc.
Now if only the new battle plan will cut back a little on the reserved and measured part (speak softly and carry a big stick).
Leaders need to rally the nation in a time of war, or they are not going to get the backing they need. War is fought in the hearts of the people.
