INDIAN HILL, Ohio – An Iraq war veteran who drew national attention when he ran for Congress criticizing the president chased three men who had crashed into a fence outside his home, then guarded them with an assault rifle until police arrived, according to police reports.

The reports involving attorney Paul Hackett came to light during a grand jury investigation. His lawyer, Greg Moore, issued a statement Tuesday in which he acknowledged what happened and said Hackett was distressed “that the secrecy of the grand jury has been violated.”

Police in the Cincinnati suburb investigated the matter and consider it closed, Chief Chuck Schlie said.

Hackett, a Marine reservist who served seven months in Iraq, attracted a wide following in 2005 when he ran as a Democrat in a special election for a U.S. House seat in southwest Ohio, criticizing President Bush and the Iraq war.

He narrowly lost to Republican Jean Schmidt.

According to a police report, officers were called to Hackett's home on Nov. 19 after a car crashed into a fence and sped away. The officers arrived to find three men lying face down near their car and Hackett with an assault rifle slung over his shoulder.

“He said he had done this about 200 times in Iraq, but this time there was not a translation problem,” the police report said.

Hackett told police later that he was carrying a civilian model of an AR-15 and that one round was in the chamber but the safety was on. He said he never aimed the weapon at the men or put his finger on the trigger.

The driver of the car was charged with failure to maintain reasonable control, driving under suspension and carrying a concealed weapon, a pair of brass knuckles.

Hackett is a life member of the NRA and has his concealed carry license. He was pretty upset when he didn't get the NRA endorsement when he ran for office.

And it sounds like he has the arsenal to back it up, at least. Not sure I see Jean Schmidt out there with an AR-15.

As a democrat, he probably believes that his ruling class has a right to be armed, but that the little people don't.

"Hackett is a life member of the NRA and has his concealed carry license. He was pretty upset when he didn't get the NRA endorsement when he ran for office."

There are quite a few pro-gun Democrats out there. Not a majority, but a healthy minority.

Thank you for saving me the time looking up those names.

I also heard that Air Supply has a summer place there.

That's funny: it's found in my version:

"Hackett, a Marine reservist who served seven months in Iraq, attracted a wide following in 2005 when he ran as a Democrat in a special election for..."

The NRA probably figured he would only use it on conservatives.

He's "distressed" because he knows he finished in the Dimocratic Party, now that they know he owns a firearm!
LOL!

Hackett is an empty suit. The NRA knew that and he aligned himself with rats to boot, a truly stupid and navel-gazing move. He thought his military status would give him immunity, well guess again. Personally, I am a bit tired of these "military veterans' who cannot see the rat agenda, or try to pull the wool over the eyes of the public. If you really love your country, you are not a rat.

"He was pretty upset when he didn't get the NRA endorsement when he ran for office."

You'd think the NRA would realize that, pro-gun candidate or not, a vote for a Dimocrat is a vote for Speaker Pelosi.

This may be too subtle a point for Mr. Hackett, but it's true nonetheless.

This kind of citizen reaction tends to curb crime.

Pity the "authorities" and news media are so distresed by the thought of defending one's property.

What?? An assault rifle?

Isn't that what the left blames for all the ills of society and violence?

[Wonder how he stands on the Second Amendment!]

As you might have gathered from the story, he's for it.

Don't bet on it. Senator Diane Feinstein packs heat, but given the chance, she'd confiscate every gun in the country. Rules are for the little people, not the ruling elite.
