Al Qaeda Is ‘Laughing,' Bloomberg Tells Congress
New York Sun ^ | 01/09/07 | RUSSELL BERMAN

Posted on 01/10/2007 6:16:37 AM PST by presidio9

As Mayor Bloomberg scolded the federal government for "foolishness" in allocating homeland security grants, the city's congressional delegation is gearing up to use its greater political weight in a Democratic majority to bring more anti-terror dollars to the five boroughs.

Testifying before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, the mayor lambasted both Congress and the Bush administration for enacting regulations and formulas that he said limit the city's ability to collect its fair share of security funding.

Mr. Bloomberg and other city officials have long called for the Department of Homeland Security to dole out its annual grant money based on risk level alone, criticizing the government for reserving a portion of the pot for localities across the country that appear to face little threat of a terrorist attack.

While the Bush administration has taken steps recently to increase threat-based funding, it has not gone far enough, Mr. Bloomberg said yesterday.

"Instead, we have seen huge sums of homeland security money spread across the country like peanut butter," he told the committee.

Some lawmakers have said that a nationwide homeland security funding system is appropriate, suggesting that terrorists will not always aim for iconic structures like the Empire State Building or the Brooklyn Bridge but could go after the nation's food supply by attacking farm land, or strike a crowded arena or mall in Middle America. Mr. Bloomberg challenged that claim directly in his testimony before the Senate: "Do not confuse risks with targets. Every place there are risks, but there aren't that many targets and targets are what the enemies of this country will focus on."

What glory is there in bringing down a one story double wide?

Well, I do have to say it wouldn't be very wise for them to p.o. us rednecks, we have big guns with sights and hunting dogs.

You're a near sighted fool if you don't see the relationship between these two tax money sinkholes.
I'm not trolling, I"m sharing an observation that Bloomy's greed for fed money is analogous to the WOD money grubbing.

NY doesn't need anymore money, they need to use what they got responsibly. If you don't see this cry for fed money evolving along the same lines you won't be ready to stop the current and soon to increase abuse of this funding source.

BTW who made you the thread police? Shall we all ask you permission before posting on other threads you "monitor". Maybe FR should funnel all posts to you for prior approval before they show up.
Get your panties out of a twist already and take off your blinders.

I have seen to much boondoggle cash from Homeland Security get blown on stupid things to hold out much hope of that.

That's just as likely to happen anywhere else as it is here. For instance, Omaha bought new firetrucks. Newark bought new GARBAGE trucks.

There is a fair number of muslims in Iowa, and many mosques that have been connected to funding Al Quaeda. The difference is an attack in the Midwest would not be a mass casualty attempt, but probably something like contaminating the food supply or disrupting logistics.

Agreed that Bloomberg is an a-hole, but you're willing to pay with your life to make that point?

No. I just fail to see what kind of "security measures" -- especially costly ones -- could possibly be implemented in this city that would make anyone all that much safer.

As a side note, and this is not directed at you, I'm getting pretty sick of people who hate NY coming on these threads and practically rooting for another attack here.

Who's trolling??
Take the chip off you shoulder, people don't hate NY but they do hate our tax money being wasted.

LOL! I knew about the Omaha firetrucks. Heck, there was a lot of money available to improve plant security for my old company, in Portales, New Mexico.

Don't forget that Bloomie is a RAT at heart. He needs more money for his anti smoking campaign which makes common criminals out of ordinary citizens.

The NYPD and the NYFD still don't have a common emergency frequency that they can use to talk to one another in crisis situations.

Sounds pretty far-fetched. We don't story all of our food in one location. If you were going to contaminate a "supply" the obvious target is water, not food.

Seriously, take a hike. There are plenty of libertarian nutjob threads you can play on. The adults are talking about serious things here.

Since we sent a guy to jail yesterday for plotting to blow up Herald Square, you haven't been paying much attention.

Yes they do now. This was announced last week.

9/11 basically proved that even attacks on securities exchanges would have a limited effect.

Cyber-terrorism represents a far bigger threat to the world's financial markets, since hacking can be done from anywhere in the world and doesn't require much logistical planning at all.

There's a reason why you don't hear CEOs of major brokerage firms down in Washington calling on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to give them money to secure their computer networks. This is one industry that's smart enough to realize that government officials like Congressmen and Michael Bloomberg are the last people they'd ever want to rely on for the security of their assets.

Bloomy can't even get the replacement for the trade towers built. More than five years later the Hole is still empty.

Northrop Grumman is currently working on this project. It's supposed to take a few years and I've already seen them scope down from the original plan.
Man, I hope they make this well and don't get completely caught up in profits and cut important corners.

You are incorrect. They are codependent. The next big attack will be perpetrated mostly by Muslims who got here illegally.
