The Bush administration yesterday moved to boost U.S. oil and gas supplies by lifting a longstanding moratorium on drilling in Alaska's Bristol Bay, as OPEC accelerated plans to reduce supplies in order to prop up sagging crude prices.
Days before the House is expected to roll back oil industry tax breaks, the Bush administration also decided to boost royalty rates by a third for ultra-deep-water oil and gas drilling. The action eliminates extra incentives that had been given to offset some of the high costs of operating in those offshore areas. The Interior Department said the change would generate an additional $4.5 billion over 20 years.

The Dems are fixing to finish killing off domestic oil production. They will fight this order by Bush, of course.
Yes, the dims will fight this. But, as bnelson44 pointed out on the other thread on this, what the President has done is a matter of national security. If he takes that position, that might limit what the dims can do to stop this.
Kudos to President Bush!
And Bush didn't do this five years ago while he had a republican Congress because...
Back in the Clinton days, Clinton was using the Executive order authority to seize land for national parks and "monumnets" out west to satisfy the enviromental lobby before the 96 election. He did this over the objections of the the GOP congress. Why can't Bush citing a real national emergency open up these areas to exploration by the same method? I just don't get why he and the GOP did not make oil exploration more of national security issues. It would have won doing it that way.
Yes, GWB has his boots on!
It wasn't available as an option. Congress had to first repeal the law against drilling there (done in late 2003), then it wasn't until bureaucrats begin denying permits to oil drillers (by citing President Clinton's moratorium Executive Order of 1998) that anyone even knew that President Bush had to rescind WJC's XO.
By D.C. standards, the double-ban on drilling there has been rescinded in record time.
If you want to place blame where blame belongs, you're looking at the wrong man, gcruse.
Even IF they find an ocean of oil and that can be drilled for $0.39 a foot and it is just under the surface - it will be at least 5 years before any hits market.
Find a globe. Find Cold Bay (An alternate landing stripfor the Shuttle BTW) then look due South. You will find the line lands just East of New Zealand. The area is *remote*.
IF they find anything.
He should have done this six years ago if it only takes him decding.
Way to go Dims... first day on the job and we got more troops for Iraq and Alaska open for business.....! You told America you were going to take a stand........SO STAND UP!
Since when did the Democrats, as a whole, take national security seriously?
They blocked oil exploration and development in ANWR, which could improve national security.
They want to give constitutional rights to enemy combatants.
They refuse to close the borders and put controls and enforcement back in immigration.
They oppose sections of the Patriot Act that allow gathering of evidence by terrorist subversives at home and abroad.
They only view the War on Terror as a police action suitable for the UN, and open for negotiation.
They support Iran obtaining nukes because they refuse to allow appropriate action to stop and destroy the Iran nuke program.
Show me something about national security Democrats support, and I can show you 10 serious flaws in their agenda.
Two words: Executive Order. No need to even ask the dims what they think.
Excellent! Great action by the President to kick off the new year. He's been on point this week.
Please, Mr. President, extend this order to drill the rest of the state and ANWR.
Based on the government's current budgets (approaching 3 trillion), the revenue gained from this egregious disincentive to energy independence will amount to a fart in the wind.
I would lend my support to any conservative candidate who publicly proclaimed that the greenies should be irrelevant dicks when it comes to our nation'a energy security.
Good news ping
