WASHINGTON, January 8, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Pro-abortion House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the most powerful Catholic in Congress is recasting her image as a Italian Catholic mother, despite her stark defiance of the Catholic Church’s teachings opposing abortion, embryonic stem-cell research, and same-sex marriage. The Speaker publicized well in advance her visits to St. Leo the Great church in Baltimore and attendance of a special Mass at Trinity University offered for victims of hurricane Katrina and of the Darfur genocide, as part of her plan to propel the image of a good Roman Catholic mother and grandmother at home in the Democratic party.
“The Catholic Mass also signals something very important,” Katherine Hall Jamieson, a liberal professor, told the Baltimore Sun. “The Democratic Party wants those defecting Catholics who have voted for Republicans for a long time but came back to the Democratic Party in 2006 to see the Democratic Party as home.” Pelosi’s much publicized attendance of the Catholic Mass at Trinity January 3rd has dismayed pro-life advocates looking to recently appointed Archbishop Donald Wuerl to correct Pelosi’s assertions that she is a “conservative Catholic.”
Judie Brown, president of American Life League, had appealed to Archbishop Wuerl to use what power and influence he could muster to deter Nancy Pelosi from making the Mass at Trinity University a political spectacle. Brown said it is “unconscionable for Rep. Pelosi to call herself a Catholic in good standing while supporting the heinous act of abortion.” “As a practicing Catholic mother and grandmother, I am highly offended that this woman would use the influence of her new office to flaunt her Catholic label while advocating the brutal murder of preborn children without apology” Brown wrote in Human Events.
“A thinking person with any sort of moral sensibilities would conclude that the bald-faced contradiction between advocating for abortion and heralding one’s attendance at a Catholic Mass is simply outrageous and should not be permitted.” Susan Gibbs, spokeswoman for the Archdiocese of Washington and the Archbishop, told LifeSiteNews.com that the Archdiocese had nothing to do with the event. Gibbs said Archbishop Wuerl did not interfere since Trinity University was under the jurisdiction of a religious order, the Sisters of Notre Dame, not the Archdiocese, and said she was redirecting complaints to Trinity. Gibbs did not indicate whether Wuerl intends to discipline Pelosi for her public support of abortion, embryonic stem-cell research, and same-sex marriage.
Pelosi’s Catholic Mother and Grandmother public relations ploy may be working to distract voters from her uncontradicted anti-Catholic beliefs. A Rasmussen Reports national phone survey of 800 likely voters released Friday show Pelosi's approval rating has jumped to 43 percent -- up 19 points from November. Pelosi, who has received a 100 percent rating from NARAL, a radical pro-abortion group, vowed to reinstate funding for embryonic stem-cell research in the first 100 hours of the 110th Congress.

There is the adjective "catholic" (lower case c)which is used in the creed and means universal. There is the proper noun Catholic (upper case c) which has come to signify the organization that is the Roman Catholic Church unless it is preceded by an adjective such as Maronite Catholic or Eastern Rite Catholic.
Granted, the creed has been around longer than Protestantism, but the choice not to change it from lower case c to capital C seems to signify that they are talking about Christianity as a whole.
You are correct. I can assure you when Presbyterians recite the Creed, we don't mean the Catholic Church, but the church universal.

No priest may say Mass within the Archdiocese of Washington (and Trinity is inside the city of Washington) without faculties from the Archbishop of Washington. That is whether he works directly for the archdiocese or not.
The Archbishop of Washington is well within his rights and obligation to require that a priest with faculties within his See may not give Holy Communion to a specific lay Catholic for reasons of giving public scandal.
The buck should have stopped with Archbishop Wuerl. Too bad he ducked.

Archbishop Wuerl made his views known on this subject while still Bishop of Pittsburgh. He has stated strongly that he doesn't believe in denying pro-abort Catholic politicians Holy Communion, as, in his view, this "politicizes" the Eucharist. Thus, in my view, writing him a letter seems pointless. He has a closed mind on the subject.
And I have a closed wallet to his appeals.

Well, whether he is a good shepherd or not, it was well within his authority to stop this abomination.
It's likely that I'll be down on the Mall in two weeks for the March for Life. I imagine that we will all be "treated" to a flatulent speech from his Excellency, the Archbishop of Washington, yammering on about the sanctity of life. His words will ring hollow in my own ears, as I will be remembering his act of hypocrisy with regard to Ms. Pelosi and her merry band of baby murderers.

Pro-abort Governor Receives Communion at Mass in Denver
"...Ritter began the day by attending Mass at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in downtown Denver, accompanied by roughly 250 family members, friends and supporters.
The Mass, conducted by longtime family friend Rev. Bill Morell of San Antonio, TX, was Ritter's first public appearance on the day the former Denver prosecutor took the oath of the state's highest office.
"I believe the call to every Christian...is to minding the gaps in life," Fr. Morell said, referring to the differences between the rich and the poor, and between public policy and everyday practice.
"This Mass is a way of helping Bill, his family and all coming into public office to ask for strength," said Morell, who counseled Ritter for two years in high school in San Antonio and who Ritter and his wife asked for help in arranging to do missionary work in Zambia years ago.
Morell lightened the mood of the service when he noted to the audience that no collection plate was being passed during the 90-minute service.
"I know those of you who have been around Bill the last couple of months find this unusual," he said to laughter. "Don't worry."
Ritter's daughter, Tally, 13, bravely stood before the congregation and spoke of her hope "for our dad and all public servants: May they be wise, humble and just." Ritter's three other children gave readings as well.
Ritter, his wife Jeannie, and the children then received Holy Communion."
Now, if you ask me to bet whether he would actually sign pro-life legislation, should the legislature flip back to the Republicans or would find an excuse not to sign it, well, I'm not risking my money.
But, like Casey of Pennsylvania, Ritter has always said he's a pro-life Catholic. As a good and honorable man, the Archbishop will take him at his word until he has reason to doubt it.
If you really follow Colorado politics you must be aware that Chaput became controversial when he pretty much told Catholics not to vote for pro-abort Catholic politicians.
"I strongly oppose any effort that would seek to criminalize women or their doctors over this issue. I would strongly oppose legislation similar to the one recently passed by the South Dakota legislature. As governor, I would enforce existing laws, including Roe v. Wade. It's not part of my agenda to change these laws. Improving education, health care and our economy - which will be the top priorities for my administration - will do more to improve the lives of children and reduce the number of abortions in our country than a divisive focus on punishing the women who find themselves turning to it as a solution." -Bill Ritter

One of my favorite stories concerned a duke of Austria, who loaned his horse to a priest, who was taking Communion to the sick. Upon returning the horse to the nobleman (the following day) the nobleman told the priest to keep the horse. It was to be used in the service of our Lord. The nobleman told the priest he was not worthy to ride the horse now that it had carried the Blessed Sacrament.
Such devotion....
