Maybe the dude that packed the sprinkler parts was making a bomb before he went to work.
Which begs the question...where did it go?
If they contain rubber parts such as O Rings or gaskets, the cyanuric acid antioxidants commonly used in rubbers could have given a false positive. It's a precursor to RDX. It depends on what method they were using. IR could be fooled, nitrosyl specific methods would not have been.
LOL!
MIAMI - The Port of Miami was hit by its second terrorism scare in two days Monday when a package that was to be loaded onto a cruise ship tested positive for plastic explosives. Authorities later determined it was harmless.
The package was initially tested six times, and each time it came back positive for the military-grade explosive known as C4, the Coast Guard said.
The package was destroyed, and a Miami-Dade County police bomb squad determined it held sprinkler parts, which contained a substance that "closely resembles" plastic explosives, said police spokesman Bobby Williams.
Williams said the instruments used to test the package sometimes give false positives.
"We still need to check it out," Williams said.
The package was included in provisions that were to be loaded aboard Royal Caribbean International's Majesty of the Seas. Explosives detection instruments gave the positive reading about 2 p.m., the cruise line said.
The FBI was monitoring the situation, spokeswoman Judy Orihuela said.
The developments came a day after three Middle Eastern men in a cargo truck sparked a brief terrorism scare at the port. After a bomb squad search, authorities concluded that the men were carrying automotive parts and that the scare stemmed from miscommunication.
Just gonna have to let em blow up Miami so's the talking heads will be happy on Sunday. The talking heads won't mind losing a few family members either, don't worry.
Wanna bet the sprinklerhead story is a cover as not to scare away passengers from cruisin'???
Very interesting.
Were yesterday & today security probes??? Does thos mean Port of Miami is a future target???
Bump!
SHOWER TIME!
Sprinkler parts! Now this is what I call a real "shower" story.
Whew!! I just hope Faux News got a couple breathless hours of reporting on the same thing over and over incessantly like they did yesterday (and on every other non-story they puff up). If they didn't, they could possibly have to resort to reporting the news and I just don't think they're up to that...
Nah! it means that Sprinklers Systems are targets!
Indeed, it will take awhile for them to fully investigate and reach ultimate conclusions. Glad to see that it now doesn't appear to have been bombs, so let's see why it set off the test. Oversensitive test? Materials or something in the process that has a similar chem signature? Some clever plot that actually involved the sprinklers in some nefarious way? Residue picked up along the way in transit? Residue transfered from the hands/gloves of a handler at the plant or in transit? Plenty of possibilities, some bad, most innocuous. Time will tell.
I haven't heard that since my last trip to DU.
CNN and MSNBC covered the story as well.
OK! I can understand "sometimes" gives, but six times? Can you imagine the out cry if a pap smear or prostrate test gave false positives in one person that many times. There would be a national outcry and they would have the test replaced in no time.
"We still need to check it out," Williams said."
Yes they do, and the sooner the better.
Probably can be explained by the difference between Type I and Type II errors when it comes to testing proceedures. If the tests don't produce false positives at times, then the test is probably too lax. What may appear to be problems with 'Keystone Cops' may actually be good work erring on the side of caution.
