The only thing for sale to Dubai was title to an English company that owned some gantry cranes in "ports".

The Port of Miami was not for sale, nor would it ever be for sale (for example).

Many of us who know what the words meant and what the value of the deal really was have begun thinking of the opponents as spokesmen for the International Longshoreman's Union and the Mafia who want to keep total control over every single item in every port in the country.

This would have been a good way to begin breaking the Mafia's back.

Couldn't we break the Mafia's back by selling the contract to someone else other than Dubai? Why with the Dubai-owned English company be any better than an American one?

You're right about the Dubai port issue being cooked up by the unions and pressed by the Democrats to insure union backing in the election. The Republicans did not lose congress to the Democrats, they lost it to the unions.

Correct, and one of the reasons that Chuckie Schumer got so intensely involved in the hysteria.
