Pelosi hints at denying Bush Iraq funds
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said newly empowered Democrats will not give President Bush a blank check to wage war in Iraq, hinting they could deny funding if he seeks additional troops.
"If the president chooses to escalate the war, in his budget request, we want to see a distinction between what is there to support the troops who are there now," she said in an interview broadcast Sunday.
"The American people and the Congress support those troops. We will not abandon them. But if the president wants to add to this mission, he is going to have to justify it and this is new for him because up until now the Republican Congress has given him a blank check with no oversight, no standards, no conditions," said Pelosi, D-Calif.
Her comments on CBS' "Face the Nation" came as Bush worked to finish his new war plan that could send as many as 20,000 additional U.S. troops to Iraq and provide more money for jobs and reconstruction programs.
Bush is expected to announce his plan as early as Wednesday.
When asked about the possibility of cutting off funds, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer declined to say whether Democrats might do so, saying only that the current strategy clearly is "not working."
"I don't want to anticipate that," said Hoyer, D-Md., on "Fox News Sunday."
Some military officials, familiar with the discussions, say Bush at first could send 8,000 to 10,000 new troops to Baghdad, and possibly Anbar Province, and leave himself the option of adding more later if security does not improve.
"Based on the advice of current and former military leaders, we believe this tactic would be a serious mistake," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.,

well you can be a 'na sayer' if you want, I won't...
I believe in our President, I believe in our troops and I believe in the mission we are doing...
You can listen to the MSM's; you can read their newspapers; listen to their rat crap, I won't....I'm out there telling everyone we can WIN this war, because WE BELIEVE....
If you don't have the spine, move aside, for those of us that will fight tooth and nail for our troops and if it means going to Washington D.C. then so be it....but WIN we WILL....
Then why did we lose in Nov?
Though I agree the majority of the american public is center to right .. the fact still remains .. We lost, The Liberals won and for the next 2 years, it will be hell because there is not a whole lot we can do to stop them
The way she is acting, she will end up alienating many in her own party.
because the people bought into it....they decided they believed what they were hearing, not what they believed....
You watch this next election....watch what happens if they try to cram McPain down our throats...it isn't going to happen....he's a RINO, only out for McPain and the heck with anyone or anything else....I'm not surprised he hasn't become a RAT yet....
The next thing I expect is for the funding bill to be tied to a Draft requirement per Rangel, I think thats how this all gets tied up.
No more hiding behind the Repubs, eh Peloser?? Let all the world see what you traitors are.
Pray for W and Our Troops
The GOP hasn't been ruined by RINOS, the party needs to have a broad spectrum of beliefs to survive with a 2 major party system. It's ruined by single-issue voters who won't support someone who isn't totally in agreement with them on guns, gays, abortion or immigration.
well you can be a 'na sayer' if you want, I won't...
na sayer....me?.....not a chance...My husband has served in Iraq and is returning in 07...now my son is there....I think I have contributed to the WOT more than the average American.
I will not sit back and watch our troops belittled and spat upon....I have already had one encounter in a parking lot over my Support the Troops sticker on my car....as for my spine...I still walk upright.
I believe that also....so Bush sends the bill back???? And hopefully goes on the road to tell the American people what the congress critters and the saneless senators are trying to do....worked for Reagan, it can work for President Bush....
The election is 2 years away .. I'm more worried about the present
Al-Qaeda is in Iraq. We continue to bag them almost daily.
Bad move Nancy.
We just might find out how many real Amsricans are left in this country. And wouldn't it be something if the democratic majority couldn't rerun Vietnam. They would lose it all.
if your going to have a cloud over your head all the time, how do you expect the sun to help you grow?????
People in hell want ice-water.
...
She would be making a serious mistake. This country would split right down the middle. We all know what will happen as a result, with hundred of thousands and perhaps millions dead. The public backlash would take her out of power. The Dims and the MSM have to be confronted for what they are: quislings.
"House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said newly empowered Democrats will not give President Bush a blank check to wage war in Iraq, hinting they could deny funding if he seeks additional troops."
Which Republicans will run on in 2008 and win. Give Pelosi all the rope she wants.
I understand your post.
Ahh, yes, the Vietnam model lives!!! The Dems did this routinely toward the end of the VN War when they got into squabbles with the Nixon WH. They would turn turn the money off to fight the war for a month until the squabble got resolved, then they'd turn it back on for the next month.
This pattern was repeated several times in the waning months of the war. The part of the story that no one ever talks about is that while the money was turned off, American troops could not buy fuel for airplanes, bullets or bombs; none of which stopped the VC from continuing their attacks and continuing to kill American troops.
This is total BS!! We need to let the Dems know that we will not tolerate a repetition of the Vietnam model. Not this time!!!
