Pelosi hints at denying Bush Iraq funds
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said newly empowered Democrats will not give President Bush a blank check to wage war in Iraq, hinting they could deny funding if he seeks additional troops.
"If the president chooses to escalate the war, in his budget request, we want to see a distinction between what is there to support the troops who are there now," she said in an interview broadcast Sunday.
"The American people and the Congress support those troops. We will not abandon them. But if the president wants to add to this mission, he is going to have to justify it and this is new for him because up until now the Republican Congress has given him a blank check with no oversight, no standards, no conditions," said Pelosi, D-Calif.
Her comments on CBS' "Face the Nation" came as Bush worked to finish his new war plan that could send as many as 20,000 additional U.S. troops to Iraq and provide more money for jobs and reconstruction programs.
Bush is expected to announce his plan as early as Wednesday.
When asked about the possibility of cutting off funds, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer declined to say whether Democrats might do so, saying only that the current strategy clearly is "not working."
"I don't want to anticipate that," said Hoyer, D-Md., on "Fox News Sunday."
Some military officials, familiar with the discussions, say Bush at first could send 8,000 to 10,000 new troops to Baghdad, and possibly Anbar Province, and leave himself the option of adding more later if security does not improve.
"Based on the advice of current and former military leaders, we believe this tactic would be a serious mistake," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.,

They're going to hold Iraq funding hostage in order to get concessions on other legislation (i.g. tax increases).
The Left has never been held to account for the ensuing slaughter, and now history is about to repeat itself, we having failed to learn its lessons.
The lesson we should have learned from Vietnam was that Democrats have no business running an America at war. To prevent that happening, they should have been crushed mercilessly when we had the chance. But we elected George "Kinder and Gentler" Bush, who thought he could fight treason with reason.
He failed. His enemies have destroyed him, and are about to destroy another nascent democracy in Iraq.
The death of every innocent victim of the upcoming bloodbath will be on the hands of the short-sighted partisan fools who voted Democrat.
Maybe this time, after another holocaust, we will understand how dangerous the Left really is, and how it must never be allowed into power again.
I like it! Copied, pasted, activated.
aaaahhhh...the taste of power is on her lips!
These days, just about everything seems to be Bass-akwards. And yet, I had hope that there were enough of us that recognized it to try and DO something about it. The elections demonstrated otherwise.
I agree, but not soft on this subject....
I was thinking about the amount. So now, they have to parley for the funds. Higher minimum wage, money for bullets, and I have to ask those who do pay most of the taxes, are you willing to foot this bill? And if so, how do we get the money spent on arms and helmets, road side bomb detection, without any shortages or pauses.
I agree.
Thanks for the quote.
Did CBS ask dumb Nancy where the Jihadists go if we go home?
Ka-Boom!
President Bush did what he had to do .. and he took the hits (many from our side) because he understands what is at stake and what we will face if we don't take a stand and fight
What (IMO) he didn't expect (nor did I) was that the voters would turn on him and put the dems in charge of congress
You can bet he (nor I) will make that mistake again
Yes, there are rino's in Congress .. but even with those rino's we had some wiggle room
Now there is none.
We either call the Dems bluff or we don't
The question is .. are we prepared for it?
You are sooo right, but we need someone YOUNG with NEW ideas for the war on terror; for the fixing of Social Security instead of giving it away to illegal immigrants; new health care; new ideas on taxes so their not set so high we can't meet them, fresh, new ideas....
A Mitt Romney; A Duncan Hunter.....get rid of these old time RINO's that are taking us down the gutter....
What is there about liberals that makes them unable to see the big picture? They make these statements with no thought whatsoever to the effect they might have on the someone other than the intended audience.
Okay, Nancy, please step right onto the plush covered tiger pit.
Not fast enough. She's it for two years at least. Plenty of time to "cut and run", and have the Jihadis follow us home. Not that there aren't plenty of them already here. But "Madam Speaker" will insure that they have rights, to plot , scheme and make their preparations to kill many of us.
Wow, he admits that Congress voted to go to war. This could have major impact on prisoner issues, terrorist surviellance and so forth.
Of course the Constitution has rarely been an impediment to Democrat ambitions in the past, no reason to think it would be now.
Besides, he's wrong. Congress still has the power of the purse, war or no war.
