Pelosi hints at denying Bush Iraq funds

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said newly empowered Democrats will not give President Bush a blank check to wage war in Iraq, hinting they could deny funding if he seeks additional troops.

"If the president chooses to escalate the war, in his budget request, we want to see a distinction between what is there to support the troops who are there now," she said in an interview broadcast Sunday.

"The American people and the Congress support those troops. We will not abandon them. But if the president wants to add to this mission, he is going to have to justify it and this is new for him because up until now the Republican Congress has given him a blank check with no oversight, no standards, no conditions," said Pelosi, D-Calif.

Her comments on CBS' "Face the Nation" came as Bush worked to finish his new war plan that could send as many as 20,000 additional U.S. troops to Iraq and provide more money for jobs and reconstruction programs.

Bush is expected to announce his plan as early as Wednesday.

When asked about the possibility of cutting off funds, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer declined to say whether Democrats might do so, saying only that the current strategy clearly is "not working."

"I don't want to anticipate that," said Hoyer, D-Md., on "Fox News Sunday."

Some military officials, familiar with the discussions, say Bush at first could send 8,000 to 10,000 new troops to Baghdad, and possibly Anbar Province, and leave himself the option of adding more later if security does not improve.

"Based on the advice of current and former military leaders, we believe this tactic would be a serious mistake," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.,

Yes, mocking Sheehan is great sport.

But she actually produces results, attention, funding, and influence for her anti-american views.

Where as we just talk to each other.

Thank you both. I was starting to think that I was the only one still fighting the democrats.

The fact that I didn't vote for democrats doesn't mean I'm not a constituent and I treat them the same way I treat the GOP. I live in the state of Levin, Stabenow and Granholm but we still manage to force their hand on many issues.

Freepers won't surrender to terrorists and we damned well better not surrender to democrats.

What ever happened to this:

Now, I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.

Men, all this stuff you've heard about America not wanting to fight, wanting to stay out of the war, is a lot of horse dung. Americans, traditionally, love to fight. All real Americans love the sting of battle.

When you were kids, you all admired the champion marble shooter, the fastest runner, the big league ball players, the toughest boxers. Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser. Americans play to win all the time. Now, I wouldn't give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed. That's why Americans have never lost and will never lose a war. Because the very thought of losing is hateful to Americans.

Now, an army is a team. It lives, eats, sleeps, fights as a team. This individuality stuff is a bunch of crap. The bilious bastards who wrote that stuff about individuality for the Saturday Evening Post don't know anything more about real battle than they do about fornicating.

Now, we have the finest food and equipment, the best spirit, and the best men in the world. You know, by God, I actually pity those poor bastards we're going up against. By God, I do. We're not just going to shoot the bastards. We're going to cut out their living guts and use them to grease the treads of our tanks. We're going to murder those lousy Hun bastards by the bushel.
- Opening monologue from PATTON.

"she's going to have a lot of blood on her hands."

She will, possibly including she and some of her fellow congressmen.

One step closer to the next American revolution.

I suggest as a prize the winner of this thread get the complete works of Newt Gingrich. Talk about a poster child for the single-issue voter. It was Newt who engineered the 1996 Republican revolution. We are foolish if we let his baggage in some areas prevent us from using his abilities to win again. If the Republicans would fight even half as hard for what they believe as the Democrats do we would still in the majority. The way the fail to support one of their own who is having difficulty is obscene. I'm not talking about situations like the Foley thing either, I'm talking about the lack of willingness to fight when the Dems and the MSM are handing out daily doses of lies and spin.

This is exactly the kind of behavior any good conservative would want from the Pelosi bunch. Not funding the war, raising taxes, beginning to destroy the economy with minimum wage hikes, taxes etc. THIS IS WHAT'S NECESSARY TO WAKE PEOPLE UP! Unfortunately, the next terrorist strike on the US will happen soon and THAT will be the ultimate rude awakening. '08 is going to be a much different story than '06.

re: I don't think she has the nerve or the political power to pull this off

I think that's a secondary consideration to her. The damage is done when the enemy hears people in high places making statements like this.

I can not for the life of me understand how America has reached the point that politicians can stand up day after day and do things that encourage the enemy and cost American lives!

If Pelosi thinks the American people are that stupid, let her give it games her best try.

The very fact that she's there in the first place makes me believe for the first time that there are many more stupid people in America than I ever thought possible.

After the election I totally dropped off the face of the news and information earth. No FR, no Rush or other talk radio -nothing (I had already given up on television and newspapers long ago). The realization of what can happen to this country as a result of the complete stupidity of the voters was more than I could handle. And it still is- I've only dabbled back here at FR and I turn the radio on occasionally. Kind of like pressing on a bruise to see if it still hurts.

She's attempting to throw a bone to the loons in her party.

Be interesting to see if they buy it...

"Al-Qaeda is in Iraq Nancy. We continue to bag them almost daily". In a recent interview with CBS's "60 Minutes," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, stated, "The jihadists (are) in Iraq. But that doesn't mean we stay there. They'll stay there as long as we're there."

She's listening to her Ultra Left base. She is going to not give our troops what they need and this will backfire on Democrats. She is pure evil this woman.

What ever happened to this:

It was lost when the "progressive" party decided that it's more important for our education system to teach children to get along and that their future is full of doom and gloom unless the "progressives" are allowed the finances to take care of them.

When I was in public grade school I remember our class singing "Onward Christian Soldiers".

Nowadays it would be a lawsuit in the making.

The GOP hasn't been ruined by RINOS, the party needs to have a broad spectrum of beliefs to survive with a 2 major party system. It's ruined by single-issue voters who won't support someone who isn't totally in agreement with them on guns, gays, abortion or immigration.

BINGO!!!! We need to unite with the RINOS not abandon them. To blame the RINOS for our problems is ridiculous! The problem is with the "Holier than thou" Republicans who didn't live up to their promises and became more corrupt than the Democrats. They turned the Moderates and Independents off of voting for them. Alienate a voter block and you lose - simple as that.

She thinks denying funds for the war is going to hurt Bush politically? She must forget, he's not running for re-election. The people who will be hurt are our military and the Iraqi people. But she can be firm in her elite smugness that she's 'doing something about the war'.

Another poster said;

There is nothing "progressive" about the modern day liberals. Modern day liberals are nothing but REGRESSIVE SOCIALIST DARWINIANS. (I appologize to Darwin) There has always been more progresion under conservative and republican ideals. The founding fathers were NOT SOCIALISTS. The were about conserving individual rights in the face of government opression. They lived in a time where monarchy was virtually absolute and the so called "progressives" would subjugate every man, woman, and child to the monarchy of political correctness.

It only proves that the leftist must hide who they are. Today they steal the phrase progressive. Yesterday they dumped communist for socialist and then dumped socialist for "liberal". Their ideas are rejected so they repackage the same mantra under a different name. Its like having a strange friend constantly involved in multilevel marketing schemes under various names. (ie amway) Sorry not buying. Time for the left to join the ashheap of history.

You give the American people too much credit. They are that stupid and they proved it in November.
