Nuclear plant target for stolen rocket launchers, police allege (Australia)

STOLEN Australian Army rocket launchers are in the hands of a home-grown terrorist group which planned to use them to attack Sydney's Lucas Heights nuclear reactor, police allege.

The Federal Police Commissioner, Mick Keelty, said a man arrested in Leumeah yesterday and charged with possessing stolen weapons was linked to a group that had planned to attack buildings in Sydney, including the reactor.

Mr Keelty would not publicly link the man, Taha Abdul-Rahman, directly to a plan to target the reactor, referring only to "evidence of a proposed target", and saying: "Clearly, there was a plan for the use of the weapon."

But the NSW Assistant Commissioner, Nick Kaldas, said: "There were a couple of sites that were probably being considered and that's one of them."

A source said an informant had specifically suggested there was a plan to attack the reactor with a rocket launcher.

Abdul-Rahman, 28, was arrested yesterday after the third raid on his home since September 30. Police allege he sold seven rocket launchers for $5000 each to Adnan "Eddie" Darwiche, a Sydney drug dealer who is now in prison serving a sentence for double murder.

From article I posted in my post 2:

"NUMEROUS Sydney buildings, including the Lucas Heights nuclear reactor and others housing US companies, were terrorist targets for illegally-bought Australian rocket launchers.

The Saturday Daily Telegraph can reveal alleged terrorists who obtained five of the launchers – believed to have been stolen from the Australian army – discussed using them on the US targets.

One of the targets was a high-rise building near Hyde Park which is the base for American Express.

Another was the nuclear reactor at Lucas Heights, NSW Assistant Police Commissioner Nick Kaldas said today.

Yesterday, a 28-year-old unemployed Leumeah man was in Central Local Court, charged with illegally obtaining and selling seven of the stolen rocket launchers. "

So, what's with the "home grown" designation? Is this meant to imply that they are NOT muslim islamists, but more like Timothy McVeigh (e.g. white, right-wing "extremists")?

If they are part of the world-wide islamist insurgency, they should be described as such. We're going to have to begin killing them all anyway, so we need to get on the same page.

The terrorists are still dangerous.

Not if they're wasting rockets on the target most impervious to them on the planet. An indication they're morons.

Gee, let me be so un-PC and venture the guess that it's MUSLIMS that did it.

No need for concern. The rocket launchers are obviously in the hands of misunderstood rowdy "youths". ;)

NSW Middle Eastern Crime Squad

That New South Wales even has a "Middle Eastern Crime Squad" speaks volumes as to the real problem.

No, it means they are Australian citizens, most likely born there of immigrant parents, but possibly naturalized.
