A record number of Jewish members will enter Congress Thursday, but more remarkable are the unparalleled positions of power they will hold on committees related to Israel, many local Jewish activists say.
Six new Jewish legislators will be joining 37 familiar faces as the 110th Congress convenes, making the total the highest-ever, according to Doug Bloomfield, a former legislative director for AIPAC.
"It's unprecedented that there have been so many [Jews] in so many positions of leadership in both houses," Bloomfield said, using a Jewish simile for how that fact will affect support for Israel: Like chicken soup, it won't hurt...
...Plus, Jews - who voted overwhelmingly Democrat in the November election (87 percent, according to exit polls) - often see more eye-to-eye with Democratic members on domestic issues and have strong personal relationships with them, according to Ira Forman, executive director of the National Jewish Democratic Council...

Needs an explanation not couched in "habit from the depression, etc..."
More Jews elected to Congress; not good news for Israel.
Exactly. And I don't get the sense that the author of this piece appreciates this.
Jews will have a cold shower when leftists join Islam to oppose Western Civilization, and throw Israel overboard.
Gonna happen, just a matter of time.
"...In addition, Forman maintained, some Republican leadership tepid on Israel was replaced by stronger supporters. "Hoyer's considered very pro-Israel. Pelosi's pro-Israel and has been very active on the issue. [Outgoing House Speaker Dennis] Hastert (R-Illinois) never was." Bloomfield added that the diminished influence of Evangelicals, many of whom vocally supported Israel, shouldn't worry Israel advocates.
He called Evangelicals "great cheerleaders" whose backing of Israel never resulted in specific action or was really tested. "They might love Israel, but they hate gays more than they love Israel...
Perhaps, that is the explanation for the 87% RAT vote. Forman, after all, claims to be influential. He, like many others, distorts opposition to homosexual marriage as "hating gays." It is nice to have friends!
Which means that if they didn't rule the world before, as some alleged, they will now!
G-d help us. Save us from our own.
Does that mean fewest WASPs ever? I decry this blatant ethnic cleansing of Congress.
One should not confuse certain Reform groups with actual Jews.
Pretty steep drop... Ronald Reagan won nearly a majority of the Jewish vote in 1984.
I know the official policy of Forman is homosexual marriage in the US but what is the status of homosexual marriage in Israel? If anyone knows I would appreciate an answer.
Most muslims, Buddhists, and Ba'hai ever set to enter Congress, too.
Reagan won only after Carter had worked his nefarious plans. Has never happened since. Will never happen again?
Though a secular state, personal matters including marriage are controlled by the religious institutions. There are 14 or 15, Judaism (not Reform or Conservative), Islam, the rest various Christian denominations. Perhaps Bahai, they've been asking. If you're a Jew you get one wife, and no one will marry you to a non Jew. In Israel, marriages in other nations are recognized. If you're Muslim, you get four, and the kids all get welfare if needed. If a denomination decided to recognize gay marriage, I've no idea what would happen, but my guess Israel's various religious institutions will be behind America's courts on that one.
Gay parades, that's something else.
BTW, the idea of eliminating civil marriage altogether and leaving it to the various religious institutions is an interesing on. In theory I'd be supportive, though here in the US we'd have 14,000, not 14.
So in Israel there is no homosexual marriage but in the US Ira Forman and others of the 87% voting RAT want "Gay marriage" here. Do I understand this correctly?
Bad news. Intellectuals are so very often foolish people.
I assume so, I don't know Forman's opinion. He lives in the US, I don't see any disconnect.
I missed Hebrew School the day they handed out the assignments. But I've made my own separate peace. I don't want to run the international banking system, or control the flow of diamonds, or any of that heavy lifting. However if the post of "Czar of Supermodels" is still open, then I'm available...
