Federal officials investigating former Newark Mayor Sharpe James last week served a subpoena on City Hall, asking for the hard drives of computers used by James' executive assistants. There's just one problem: City officials don't know where they are. When Mayor Cory Booker and his staff took office on July 1, all of the dozen or so computers in the mayoral suite of offices were gone and new machines were being installed, according to Booker spokeswoman Desiree Peterkin Bell.
Who removed them or where they ended up is unclear, said Peterkin Bell, adding that a desktop computer in the city's Corporation Counsel office also was missing. Computer hard drives are internal devices that store information entered into a computer. Those demanded in the Dec. 12 subpoena, which was viewed by The Star-Ledger, belonged to former executive assistants Rosemarie Posella and Deborah Moore. Both woman have since left city government and attempts to reach them were unsuccessful. James, who left office this summer after 20 years as mayor but remains a state senator, did not return phone calls left at both his home and his new job at Essex Community College.
The subpoena was the latest in a widening investigation that began over the summer with federal agents looking into James' travel and entertainment expenses while in office. It has since expanded to include the discounted sale of vacant city land to developers with ties to the former mayor, according to sources close to the investigation, who asked not to be identified because the probe is ongoing.
Another subpoena delivered to City Hall earlier this month seeks the personnel files of a number of top officials in James' administration, including some who devised and implemented the city's vacant land sale program.

Where was Sandy Berger?
I was born in the North Ward and escaped to Belleville as a kiddo! Graduated two years after Connie Francis and Joe Pesci, (well he really didn't finish school but he turned out okay).
Not in prison, could have been anywhere. Maybe Newark .
They are probably Gateways and just out for service.
Newark post-Sharpe James is coming back. Housing prices have soared and businesses are announcing plans to move in. It's amazing what getting read of one stupid, dirty politician can do for a community.
Theft of city property, obstruction of justice, accessory after the fact ... chances are good that a little fish will flip if caught and faces those charges.
Look for them in a deep river or lake.
bump
Newark Bay.
I was on the crew team and we dropped the shell one time because there was an arm sticking out from under the dock.
I live in Garland and my daughter was on the North Mesquite Marching band. Surprisingly their Alma Mater as godd ole BHS. Whenever the Alma Mater was sung I would say the BHS words softly ....Was just home for my 45th reunion!
I still live in NJ. I have family that moved to Texas though. I might send my daughter out there for the summer because my niece is having her first child in June.
I vaguely remember a quote from Newark Mayor Hugh Addonezio (sp?) back in the late 1960's... it went something like "they say there's power being in Congress... but you can make millions in Newark!" That was just before he was sent up the river...
Glad to see few things change in the Garden State over the years. Nice to know there are somethings you can always count on.
LOLOL....nothing's changed. My uncle was Corporation Counsel for the City of Newark and I helped him work on Adonizzio's appeal after his conviction.
