It is perfectly acceptible to fly the state flag directly beneath the U.S. Flag on the same flagpole.

On flagpoles that are not high enough, we would only fly the U.S. Flag when flying it at half staff at fire stations.

Flag Etiquette

I once complained that the Maryland Flag had been hung upside down when it hadn't.

Is the Flag of Texas the only state flag permitted to fly at the same height as the U.S. flag?

There is no prohibition in the U.S. Flag Code against any state -- nor any city, county, or government -- raising its flag to the same height as the U.S. flag. The prohibitions are that no flag should fly *above* the U.S. flag and that in the United States, the U.S. flag should have the position of honor, usually on the viewer's left. It is believed that under strict interpretation of Texas law, the flag of Texas has the place of honor next to the U.S. flag, which means it should be raised ahead of other nations' flags. This practice is not fully accepted in international etiquette, but it is also not a question of height.

Two flags on the same pole is wrong, wrong, wrong. When in doubt, check the Boy Scout Handbook.

I'm in doubt because I can't find my old Handbook, but I can hardly imagine that it differs from The Flag Code itself:

f. When flags of States, cities, or localities, or pennants of societies are flown on the same halyard with the flag of the United States, the latter should always be at the peak.

BTW (to other posts), there are no exceptions for the Texas state flag.

I used to be a huge fan of Texas.

The job I have requires me to juggle a lot of state mandates involving health insurance coverage. Without a doubt Texas is the most screwed up of any state in the Union. California cannot match Texas for dumb.

Best indication that today is a slow news day when garbage like this shows up as "news" - on Fox, no less.

the Texas flag is the only one allowed to fly at the same level as the U.S. flag because we are the only state that was every it's own country prior to joining the Union.

I've heard that from other Texans as well, and I always wonder why Hawaii doesn't get the respect it deserves. It was an independent kingdom and then briefly a republic before petitioning for annexation.

I don't think one needs to credit transient independent states like Vermont or California to see that Hawaii meets the same threshold.

There's a church down the street from work here that flies the Mexican flag on the same pole below the American flag; I've always wondered about that protocol.

Catholic?

"... we are the only state that was ever[y] its own country prior to joining the Union."

Hawaii was an independent monarchy prior to 1893.

It may be wrong, but it's done all the time. My local post office flies the U.S. flag with the MIA flag underneath.

Your very charitable.
It looks like the symbol for some sort of masked schizophrenia to me.
