Johnson, hospitalized, becomes chairman of spending subcommittee (Senator Tim Johnson)

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. Tim Johnson won a coveted chairmanship of a Senate Appropriations subcommittee Thursday, even though he is still in critical condition after emergency brain surgery last month.

The South Dakota Democrat remains in intensive care after suffering a brain hemorrhage Dec. 13 and missed the opening day of the Senate.

Johnson's office announced that he has been named chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs. The senator "will lose none of his rights during his absence" and his office remains open for business, said spokeswoman Julianne Fisher.

Is he conscious? Talking? Aware of what has happened this week with respect to his position in the senate?

1/3/07 Senator Johnson’s overall medical condition has improved steadily over the past three weeks. The next phase of his recovery is expected to take several months and focus upon rehabilitation and physical therapy.

Of the three things you mentioned (consciousness, awareness, and ability to talk) only one seems to be a job requirement. I know it's cold but in his current state he would be a better head of the appropriations committee as he would be unlikely to introduce new spending opportunities.

If he is still in intensive care, it is beginning to sound like he is brain dead.

The governor needs to replace him.

WTH is this? How can they choose somebody who is obviously an invalid (at this time at least)? Additionally, how can the Dims be sure that Sen. Johnson will be up to the job when he returns.

Remember the Dim demands that Chief Justice Rehnquist resign after he fell ill? What's good for the goose and all that....

"The next phase of his recovery is expected to take several months and focus upon rehabilitation and physical therapy."

Geez, that is a long time to not have a Senator represent you. If this is what will happen, He needs to be replaced.

Shhhwang.

This then is the real-time reprisal of Blake Edwards' 1981 flick "S.O.B."

Who's weirder: Hollywood or Democrats?

Unlikley to introduce new spending on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs. Those are not areas where I would favor cuts.

The governor needs to replace him.

Will not happen. Far more infirm leaders have been in Congress - John Quincy Adams dropped dead after a vote in the House of Representatives. The only way this will occur is either Senator Johnson dies or resigns. The former is unlikely, the latter will be prevented at all costs.

Regards, Ivan

There is absolutely NO hope of Johnson regaining his faculties. Therefor, I call for Johnson to be starved to death immediately. He's actually unresponsive to stimuli and therefor starvation won't be painful. I'm sure you all agree that we need to starve these people to death!!
