Record snow fall buries Anchorage ( Global Warming )
KTUU ^ | Jan. 3, 2007 | Jason Moore

It's been snowing all day in Anchorage and it's still coming. A combination of snow, fog and ice contributed to more than 100 cars becoming stuck in ditches and snow berms across the city.

The Anchorage Police Department said accidents occurred at a pace of a collision every 10 minutes today.

A snow advisory remains in effect and the job of digging out is only beginning.

Midtown resident Linda Rinard just returned from vacation.

"I just flew in at 9:00 a.m. from Las Vegas; two weeks and sunny Las Vegas," she said.

Sherri Stein picked up Rinard from Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and brought her to Stein's driveway. Rinard and Stein are among the army of folks with shovels and snow blowers digging out, but only making room for more snow to take its place. The constantly falling snow and fog make it difficult for drivers to see the road.

Some ended up stuck in a snow bank like Jennifer Alger.

"I was just driving down the road and everything all looked the same, just all white. And my tires caught the snow bank, just went right through it, so my car's completely stuck," she said.

The worst of the snow-related accidents happened on the Glenn Highway this morning. Five cars and two people were taken to the hospital. Traffic was forced to reroute on the Hiland Road exit.

Some of those in the ditch say they dove for it as they tried to avoid other cars.

"I just decided to get in the ditch rather than hit them in the middle of the road," said Shannon Overstreet, who was stuck in a ditch.

It's been in the 40's and sunny here in NY. Very unusual but when it's warmer than normal somewhere, it's going to be colder than normal somewhere else. It's that average global temperature thing. I'm enjoying it no matter what. I know we'll get ours some other time.

It's a term of endearment for those who come to Alaska to teach Alaskans how it is done.

Gee, my sister lives in Anchorage and she was sniffling to me about how 'it doesn't snow in Anchorage anymore' because of global warming. Of course the discussion usually ends whenever I say 'isn't global warming the reason that Yosemite is no longer under a sheet of ice?'

In another display of pitch-perfect priorities, the U.N. has released its findings on cow flatulence. There's quite a lot of it.

The 400-page study, $27 million of which probably went to Saddam Hussein for old times' sake, discovered that the planet's livestock, including 1.5 billion cattle, produce 18 percent of greenhouse gases.

Apparently the beasts of the field do nothing but wander around all day asking their brethren to "pull my hoof."

Every time a cow feels a small sense of relief, a polar bear goes through the ice.

How many of that 33% do you think will make it until next fall?

Now why can't we have actual winter weather here in New England? Looking outside right now here in Connecticut, it is mostly cloudy and 55 degrees. Tomorrow's high is supposed to be mid 50s, and Saturday's high is going to be in the mid 60s

I'm a winter lover, and there has been NO SNOW AT ALL YET!! Where's my snow? I'd happily trade weather with Denver or Alaska. My poor skis haven't even been taken out of their storage bag yet.

Approximately 1/3 of the population is changed out every year. 8% is Alaska Native and generally stay in the State; not all, but most. Three years is about all one should expect from those who got inspired and showed up mostly unannounced, which is about how they will leave. As they say, 'yeah, old Pete, we remembered him fondly until we saw his taillights.'
