China's Air Force equipped with domestic-made new-generation fighter
Sources with the Air Force of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) said Friday that it has been equipped with China-made new-generation fighter aircraft, the Jian-10, or Fighter-10.
An Air Force officer told Xinhua the force's "overall battle effectiveness has been noticeably enhanced" after being equipped with the aircraft and through intensive drills and training.
He disclosed that Jian-10 was capable of launching "precision attacks while hedgehopping and making long-distance assaults at altitude above 10,000 meters". Air fleet drills have also been successfully carried out, he said.
The Information Office of the State Council also said on Friday in a white paper on national defence: "The Air Force is working to build an 'informationized' air fighting force with both offensive and defensive capabilities.
"It is reducing the number of combat aircraft, giving priority to the development of new fighters as well as air and missile defense weapons," it said.
The military sources have never revealed the specifications of Jian-10, but foreign observers have said it is comparable to mainstream fighter aircraft in the West.

This "new generation" fighter is a warmed-over clone of a clone of the F-16.

J-10 (Jian-10 Fighter aircraft 10) / F-10
The J-10 [the export version being designated F-10] is a multi-role single-engine and single-seat tactical fighter, with its combat radius of 1,000 km. It is designed for point defensive warfare with performance generatlly matching aircraft such as the Mirage 2000 deployed by Taiwan. Apparently, Chinese engineers are trying to develop the J-10 from a single F-16 provided by Pakistan, and with assistance from Israeli engineers associated with Israels US-financed Lavi fighter program, which was cancelled in 1987.

The J-10 would be a light snack for our F-22.

...observers have said it is comparable to mainstream fighter aircraft in the West. Well, yeah, like you can compare a '72 Oldsmobile to a '07 Corvette!.......

I don't know what the heck it is, but it's no warmed-over F-16.
A hint to aspiring aeronotical designers out there... When you find yourself putting canards this big on a supersonic fighter, you've done something seriously wrong. Go back and start over again.

It's closer to the Lavi which leveraged heavily off the F-16. If their is any doubt regarding Israeli involvement look at the missiles. Thoses are PL-8s which are clones of the Israeli Python III.

One a side note:
We own a jewelry store here in NJ. Just before Christmas a customer brought in two "Rolex" watches for repair. Since they were given to the customer, he had no idea if they were authentic or not. I had to bring them to my watch repair man to establish authenticity. They were such good knock offs that the repair guy had to open them up to check the movements. In order to make them feel heavy, the Chicoms placed weights inside. Sneaky little devils!

Re #11
Knock-off Rolex has been around for a long time. I am sure all kinds of sneaky techniques have been devised to pass it as genuine. So I am sure there is fairly sophisticated knowhow around to produce it.
I wonder how good this Lavi knockoff is. Certainly it looks perfect from the outside. We will see how good the stuffs inside are.:-)

With that single engine, that sucker will be lucky to break M1.5. I note the high vertical stab for alpha control, but without any blending of the leading edge of the wing, there is a huge drag spot between the trailing edge of the canard and the leading edge of the wing. Air will get stuck there, decreasing the effectiveness of the canard at speed. You need a monster engine to make that thing work, and monster engines the Chinese don't have, unless they stole more info from us.

It's a mistake to underestimate Chinese technology. Asians are smarter on average than Westerners, there's a lot of them and they've been taking engineering courses in the US for a long time now... and thinking on their own.
Everybody 'knew' the Japanese could only make second-rate copies of Western technology in 1940, too.

The first thing I see is A TARGET, then drag... lots and lots of drag. I (sort of) see a composite of an F-4, F-111, F-14, F-16, and F-18. Plus a pinch of Burt Rutan for good measure. No disrespect or insult to OUR designers intended. ;0)

They could sell advertising on that billboard-sized vertical stabilizer. Think it will generate much of a return? (snicker!)

Everybody 'knew' the Japanese were destined to overtake us technologically and economically in the 1990s, too. I'd rather not underestimate opponents, but overestimating them can be detrimental as well. (Unless, of course, you're trying to drum up funds to "counter" them.)
