Critics say Social Security deal would give billions to Mexicans
Houston Chronicle ^ | 1/4/2007 | MICHELLE MITTELSTADT

Posted on 01/04/2007 4:55:18 AM PST by markomalley

WASHINGTON — A confidential 2004 agreement between the United States and Mexico could require Social Security to pay billions of dollars in benefits to Mexicans who paid payroll taxes in this country, according to a senior citizens' group that forced the document's disclosure.

The Social Security Administration insists that the agreement — which has yet to be signed by President Bush and sent to Congress for consideration — would cost the retirement and disability fund a relatively scant $105 million annually for the first five years.

But the TREA Senior Citizens League, an offshoot from a group of retired military personnel, and some members of Congress contend the agreement opens the door to paying benefits to millions of Mexicans who have worked illegally in the United States, as well as their dependents, even if they now reside in Mexico.

at least we had a chance with the Pubs.....now, we have NO CHANCE WHATSOEVER......happy?

You must be on the wrong thread. This thread is about the Totalization Agreement with Mexico that Jo Anne Barnhart, Bush's appointee as the SS Administrator, signed with Mexico. It is also about Americans having to find out about this via FOIA, the Freedom of Information Act. I wonder why certain PUBS decided to keep this info secret.

Read the article.

The 'treaty' hinges on Bush's signature. Until then, Congress has no say in it.

If you are going to assess blame, at least put it were it belongs -- George Bush.

This is truly insane.

The only benefit the average American taxpayer sees from the massive influx of illegal immigrants is the increase in social security payroll taxes.

Now we're going to negate that by paying out benefits to the illegals???

Insane.

just why did you let my SS tax money be stolen?

I did it just to tick you off, and apparently, it worked.

Now, let's try for your IRS refund.

SSI is available to those who have the manatory 6 or so quarters of contributions from recent work history. Not real sure how they work this, but it's all in the computer data bases...

I don't know all the specifics off hand, but you can find it on the Social Security web site.

A person with no work history going back ten years is automatically not eligible. You must be a valid worker to qualify for SSI, it is not welfare, as I said and it is often confused with State welfare programs.

Nonsense....Even Rush said today that it was discussed at length on his show. The first I heard about it was 2004 when Vicente Fox spoke about it in public. It was not secret. The FYI was to get the documents.

It amazes me how easy it is to get a Conservative to knee jerk like a dying chicken.....

No wonder the Dem's had it so easy kicking us out of the majority.

"I pray President Bush will NOT give in to the Dems"

What they wanted us to know was made public in 2004. So why the FOIA?

This is just like the SPP. The elites lets you know only what they want you to know. So why was part of that exposed under the FOIA?

No wonder the Dem's had it so easy kicking us out of the majority.

Agree. Just ask no questions and keep your mouth shut./s

I have no idea what some people don't seen to know, or why...

There is nothing about this news that is new to me regarding the agreement. It is, BTW, the same one we have with dozens of other countries, and was one of the things that Fox publicly said was on the agenda in 2004.

if you recall, the Fox meeting was postponed after 9/11 and when Bush and Fox met, this was one of several issues.

When the treaty was signed, I was not aware who had signed it however. But the story died. Rush talked about it, and we discussed it here, but i can't recall what came first. I don't recall the media going after it, it did not make a big splash then. It was just more of the immigration debate which was raging at the time.

We have to have these reciprocal agreements, because if we don't, our ex-pats are treated badly or with the same rules we use on theirs.

Also, several law suits were filed on this issue from Mexico in 2003. I assumed it was a done deal until today. I appears likely that Congress will not intervene as this is a treaty and falls under the presidents purview.

I can't imagine why they would fight it, now that Republicans have absolutely no say in how this country is run.

Personally, I think it needs some tweaking to differentiate between a legal and illegal worker. i have not read all the docs, and I can't comment on the specifics.

It has got to be a long-term geo-political strategy to help our neighbors as much as possible, lest less-savory types start to control our region, making life very miserable. What's a few more (worthless, print-at-will) dollars here or there, versus a dramatic change in the American landscape as know it. We're not getting the complete picture here. That's my theory.

It would take a big area for it to show up. I did a heartbead tattoo on Osama's arm in one animation.

Yes, the head could be changed, the tattoo could be changed.............

I want to jam up the IRS by sending all the returns by mail to one location. Best done by spreading the mailing over 7 day period.

It's all about money and deals. They are ramming the MexAmeriCan highway and Kansas City / Mexican port authority down our throats saying it is good for America. It may be good for big business, but election turnout can trump shady back room business deals.

Even when the motives and means are exposed, our government BLATANTLY continues down the same path dispite huge public outcry.

The remedy??? A subversive word comes to mind.......REVOLUTION!!

>>REVOLUTION!<<

It sounds like a good idea but a simpler one would be to NOT reelect anyone who is currently in office. In other words start over again with the express intent of removing every federal and state employee from their current position within the next decade.

That includes legislators, judges, everyone all the way down to the guy who checks your ID for parking on federal or state property.

I realize that a lot of those people are good, fine hard working people BUT in my mind they haven't been doing their job because they know what the problems are and they haven't done a damn thing to correct them.

Sorry folks but it's too late to give you a second chance, out the door you would go, if I had my say.
