NYT may drop Ombudsman

NEW YORK The New York Times may do away with its public editor position when the two-year term of Byron Calame -- only the second person to hold the independent slot -- concludes in May, according to a report in today's New York Observer.

“Over the next couple of months," Executive Editor Bill Keller wrote in an e-mail to the Observer's Michael Calderone, "as Barney’s term enters the home stretch, I’ll be taking soundings from the staff, talking it over with the masthead, and consulting with Arthur” -- Publisher Arthur O. Sulzberger Jr.

Keller added that “some of my colleagues believe the greater accessibility afforded by features like ‘Talk to the Newsroom’ has diminished the need for an autonomous ombudsman, or at least has opened the way for a somewhat different definition of the job.”

Calame told the Observer, “I have been critical of the newsroom. I’ve also praised the newsroom, and I think that Bill Keller has been—quite obviously—unhappy with some of the things I’ve written....It seems to me that the high degree of independence that has been given to the public editor at The New York Times makes it a situation that inevitably causes criticism."

Well, that didn't take long. Just a day or two after Calame's very brave and well-written OpEd piece appeared in last Sunday's Times, pointing out that a reporter lied his head off about an abortion in Latin America, that he had an egregious conflict of interest with a pro-abortion organization, and that the editors and publishers refused to admit the error, including Pinch himself.

It was Rathergate all over again, and now we have their answer. More coverup and denial.

Marketing firms like New York and Times do not require an ombudsman. No big suprise here.

The truth hurts, so the Times will get rid of the hurt.

Lying weasels!!! Their current ombudsman exposes the flagrantly honest piece on infanticide in El Salvador and Keller wants to avoid such scrutiny in the future.

BILL KELLER IS LEFTIST SCUM!

Well if I understand the concept of an ombudsman they are supposed to make sure the credibility of the content of a newspaper is upheld. If this interpretation of an ombudsman is correct it's clear the NY Times had only two choices, either fire him or kill him !!!

Pinch is above any trivial concerns like truth or objectivity-he has the higher responsibility of one who has "vision".

The Ombudsman has integrity-that's a lot more than Pinch will ever have.

Look, you're being too hard on the New York Times and the MSM in general. If it really was as bad as you say, readers would be deserting newspapers all over the country... Opps, ummmm, never mind...

What about speaking truth to power, exposing the nefarious workings of large corporations, and all that? Isn't that what the Times is supposed to pride itself on? These guys are so obvious.

Of course. They need to get rid of the only publicly-accountable independent voice on the entire paper.....

....just in time for the 'Rat takeover of Congress and Herself's coronation in 2008.

Arthur Sulzberger Jr. fired Howell Raines over the fabricated news scandal two years ago. I was no Raines fan but he was a scapegoat. Traditionally there is a corporate "wall" between the publisher's office and the newsroom. Since Sulzberger took over the Times in the early '90's that "wall" disappeared. He fired Judith Miller because her investigations in Iraq and Kurdistan of genocide via poison gas lent credence to the notion that Saddam possessed weapons of mass destruction. Also, her coziness with Scooter Libby made her politically suspect. She was fired after spending 90 days in a D.C. jail protecting a news source. If you look at the goofs and twinks that write opinion columns for the Times it is plain that 95 percent of the personnel march in ideological lockstep. Sulzberger is the real editor while Keller is a yes-man, a figurehead and public relations flack. Both the current and former ombudsman made the mistake speaking the truth.

Free Republic is the best antidote to the daily poison that spews from the NY Slimes.

To everyone reading this thread: Become a regular donor or monthly donor.

Liberals and CINOs don't donate to Free Republic.

Byron Calame forgot that the MSM believes that "ombudsman" should mean "apologist." His objective criticism of the Times' lies promoting abortion will probably get him fired.

Maybe Patterico is hiring.
