WASHINGTON Long before the national press spotlight began to shine on every twist and turn of his life's journey, Senator Obama had this to say about himself: "Junkie. Pothead.
'That's where I'd been headed: the final, fatal role of the young would-be black man. ... I got high [to] push questions of who I was out of my mind."
The Democratic senator from Illinois and likely presidential candidate offered the confession in a memoir written 11 years ago, not long after he graduated from law school and well before he contemplated life on the national stage.
At the time, 20,000 copies were printed and the book seemed destined for the remainders stacks.
Mr. Obama's confessions were not an issue during his Senate campaign two years ago. But now his open narrative of early, bad choices, including drug use starting in high school and ending in college, as well as his tortured search for racial identity, are sure to receive new scrutiny.
As a potential candidate, Mr. Obama has presented himself as a fresh voice offering a politics of hope.
Many say he offers something new in American politics: an African American with a less-than-traditional name who has so far demonstrated broad appeal. What remains to be seen is whether the candor he offered in his early memoir will be greeted with a new-style acceptance by voters.
Through his book, Mr. Obama has become the first potential presidential contender to confess to trying cocaine.

Doesn't he have a coke jaw?
Probably because as far as society is concerned, they're black, and rightly or wrongly will be seen as black by all they meet, and treated as black by all those people who do treat someone differently on the basis of color.
Da B*itch set me up!
Vote against Osama Obama! One Hussein was ENOUGH!
I always say I am German, because my mom is full German (from the old country, even), and my dad is European mutt (including German), so I identify with the German side more.
Didn't Hill ban all smoking from the White House? Well, what's he gonna do, go outside for a cigarette?
Uh-oh.
There you go, he did things that will only elevate him in the ranks of liberal icons. If he could now only add that he has a few bastard children running around, he's a lock for the Dem nomination.
If it were really a "lethal" smear the Clintons would've held it until it mattered in the primaries or around a debate.
The GW Bush DWI news was held until the eve of the election. If it cost him 0.52% of the vote, it cost him the "popular vote". So much for Gore's "victory".
Bubba never has released his medical records. Some suspected that a cocaine induced heart attack was the reason.
Lessee, "I just experimented" and "I didn't inhale" seems to work for pot - will it work for coke?
The cokehead bit was always sidestepped, which irritated me and created some amount of distrust towards Bush. I don't care about Obama's drug use as long as he admits it and shows it's long in the past. And not having had it covered up would be nice too.
Not that I'd ever vote for the guy though.
I tried snorting coke once, but the bubbles made me sneeze.
I still don't see how people voted for someone who is so incompetent that he can't even smoke a joint right.
What's a beeker? Something you beek with?
Experimenting with drugs is a lot like law or medicine or those other professions called 'practices.' The experimenter can use it all his life but until there's no mystery left, he's just trying it out. Or something.
One nice thing about Christianity vs. Islam is that Christianity doesn't want you to change your name upon conversion.
Looks to me like we're letting ourselves be stampeded by this guy. All he's trying to do is get a second printing of his book, make the NYT's best seller list and retire as a millionaire.
What? No crack?
The only person who "dragged it out" is Obama himself. He proudly published it in a book and made a tidy profit off it.
