Obama's Youthful Drug Use May Recieve Closer Scrutiny (Pot, Cocaine)
The New York Sun & Washington Post ^ | January 3, 2007 | Lois Romano

WASHINGTON — Long before the national press spotlight began to shine on every twist and turn of his life's journey, Senator Obama had this to say about himself: "Junkie. Pothead.

'That's where I'd been headed: the final, fatal role of the young would-be black man. ... I got high [to] push questions of who I was out of my mind."

The Democratic senator from Illinois and likely presidential candidate offered the confession in a memoir written 11 years ago, not long after he graduated from law school and well before he contemplated life on the national stage.

At the time, 20,000 copies were printed and the book seemed destined for the remainders stacks.

Mr. Obama's confessions were not an issue during his Senate campaign two years ago. But now his open narrative of early, bad choices, including drug use starting in high school and ending in college, as well as his tortured search for racial identity, are sure to receive new scrutiny.

As a potential candidate, Mr. Obama has presented himself as a fresh voice offering a politics of hope.

Many say he offers something new in American politics: an African American with a less-than-traditional name who has so far demonstrated broad appeal. What remains to be seen is whether the candor he offered in his early memoir will be greeted with a new-style acceptance by voters.

Through his book, Mr. Obama has become the first potential presidential contender to confess to trying cocaine.

Designed to air this out ahead of time and make it common knowledge.

The only issues I see are: (1) whether or not he's changed, and (2) what his support is for drug trafficking and use.

Remember how the media relentlessly smeared W. as a "drunk" and a "cokehead" for long-past behavior?

I demand nothing less than the same treatment for Obama.

Pothead! Doper! Crackhead! ...

well before he contemplated life on the national stage

Obama has always been ambitious and seen himself on the national stage. Anyone who followed his community organizing approach on the streets of Chicago would instantly recognize this. Anyone who listened to him on the early days of talkradio recognized this immediately, as did the talk radio hosts on whose panels he served.

Either the author is ignorant or dis-honest. in either case, why should we take anything else he has to say seriously?

I'd be more interested to know other facts about him, like what sort of grades he got, did affirmative action have an impact on his college education, what about his so-called conversion to Christianity (I read that somewhere). And if he did convert, why not dump the Islamic name.

In some respects, Obama is an unlikely African-American hero: His mother was white, and he's not a descendant of slaves. His father was an exchange student from Kenya. Obama's parents met at the University of Hawaii and later divorced. His mother remarried and moved with her son and new husband to Indonesia, where young Barack attended both Catholic and Muslim schools before returning to Hawaii as a teenager. Both parents are now deceased.

In his memoir, first published in 1995 and reissued after his Democratic convention speech, Obama details his painful struggle to come to grips with his own identity.

It's a struggle, he has written, that led him to experiment with alcohol and drugs, to journey to Africa for a meeting with his half-siblings and finally to move to Chicago where he found a wife, a church and a home.

I am so cynical as to believe this won't make a difference. He's a dem, and he's black.

Now if we were talking about a Republican it would be different.

Oh, I wish I had a copy of an old picture of Hillary. It's from her college year, with long hair and glasses, where she's sitting on the bed in those infamous striped pants looking stoned out of her mind. ;^D
