Suspicion ran high yesterday that Rudy Giuliani's lost White House campaign playbook was swiped by aides to Florida's new governor - while the ex-mayor was helping him win election, sources told The Post.
Giuliani's aides were tightlipped about how it disappeared, but said it happened during a private plane ride on the campaign trail for 2006 candidates. They included Florida Gov. Charles Crist.
"During one leg of his campaign travel, all luggage was removed from a private plane and later put back on," said Giuliani's spokeswoman, Sunny Mindel.
"However, one staffer's bag was not returned. After repeated requests over the course of a few days, the bag was finally returned with the document inside.
"Because our staffer had custody of this document at all times except for this one occasion, it is clear that the document was removed from the luggage and photocopied," she added, stopping short of saying it was stolen.
"Voters are sick and tired of dirty tricks. They are interested in substantive issues and want leaders like Rudy who are as well," Mindel said.
But operatives outside Giuliani's camp said the book was taken during a campaign swing for Crist - a Republican, like Giuliani - whose inauguration to replace Jeb Bush as Florida's governor took place yesterday.
Crist's aides didn't return calls for comment.

I'll bet one of Hillary's Harlots got it.
I wasn't aware that he was in favor of killing children. Is there a bag limit...is it always open season?
If you do, please add me.
Does anyone know if Crist has endorsed any '08 candidate, or if any of his campaign staff has joined any '08 campaign after Crists election?
I am by no means a Rudy supporter, but I do love his leadership qualities, and I think he would make a great President.
However, when the thief's name is revealed, I won't trust their candidate at all. We don't need a Sandy Burglar on our team.
So who was it? Mitt? McCain? Hmmmm...
Exactly. Seems all Rudy supporters say his liberal stances are all just fine & dandy because he'll appoint constructionist judges, etc. A president isn't much more good than the people the chooses to advise him & work with him. Sounds like Rudy ain't cutting the mustard already!
Bingo! I think people need to look at the aides that popped up on Crist campaign and are now working for another campaign. I think the Rudy staffer knows exactly who took that piece of luggage because no way someone else would have known. I would like the age of the staffer. Finding more and more campaigns that are hiring 20+-year olds that don't have the experience and are up for sale.
It has happened here in OK and cost some people seats so I imagine it is happening in other places.
Yes I do have a ping list and I would be most happy to put you on it. :-)
Crist needs new staffers. I could take Rudy's playbook to Kinko's for photocopying in a lot less than four days.
Nice tagline. I agree. Say no to Rudy!
LOL, Thanks. Actually I haven't paid much attention to my tagline. It just follows me like my faithful dog. :)
Now THAT was quite a leap!
I have no one to blame but your take is the best. It's the Hillary machine
I sure do and also remember that a briefcase belonging to Karen Hughes was taken in 2000 while in a motorcade in MO. Suspicion ran high that one of the MO campaign folks was a mole. To this day, I would bet money that he was the mole.
Campaign staffers need well vetted because we had a lot of problems here in OK this time. The young staffers get arrogant and think they control the world. One 22-year old arrogant twerp cost my House Rep his seat when the Rep was dumb enough to make him his campaign manager. Talk about dirty tricks, this guy has already mastered them.
Then of course, we had the famous Foley page and his 26-year old accomplice in charge of the Republican Governor's race. The young guys come cheap and they don't have the background to run major campaigns or even be around them except to put out signs, etc. They show no loyalty at least here in OK and it becomes about themselves instead of the candidate.
Don't know who has been in charge of the College Republicans lately but they know all the dirty tricks that can be pulled in a campaign and they use them when they attach themselves to a campaign. Someone needs to clean house at the National level and on down the line and teach these people ethics because their campaigns for office like in my state have been crooked the last several times. They are more like Clintonites then they are Republican CR's.
Crist is more liberal than Giuliani, so I can't see what his motive would be. Maybe his aids aren't, though.
My suspicion is that it was taken by Democrats. Maybe Crist has some Democrats on his payroll.
Personally, I'd like to see the culprit apprehended and prosecuted for theft.

Dual loyalty gays might be behind it.... this theft. Crist is an unacknowledged gay or bi. I voted for him. But the gay trash talk down here is real as far as I can tell.
Seems like every presidential election so far. Romney just signed exploratory papers a few minutes ago. He better be careful too. Maybe this will make the other candidates more leery of who they have on their campaign. Hmmm I wonder if Hillary and McCain are in cohoots to be the front runners.
It doesn't hurt Rudy a bit. It's the guys who stole the thing that are in deep doo-doo.
I would not be too surprised if there is a Clinton behind this. Follow the money, I say.
"Crist is an unacknowledged gay or bi."
He might be gay, but he's not "acknowledged." I don't see why that would prompt him to turn on Giuliani, though. Most likely, it was a Democrat who did it. Maybe Crist has some spies on his payroll.
The fact is, right now we have very little information about this "temporary" theft. It may have been a high-level, well-crafted political trick, or just some loser staffer looking for material to shop around.
