French court rules pork soup kitchen not racist

A French court ruled Tuesday that an organization with far-right links can continue offering pork soup to the homeless, rejecting police complaints that the food distribution was racist.

Police banned the soup kitchen last month, arguing that the handouts discriminated against Jews and Muslims who do not eat pork on religious grounds.

The administrative court said the distribution was "clearly discriminatory," but could not be stopped because the organizers offered to feed anyone who asked for help.

The mayor of Paris condemned the ruling and urged the police to appeal the ruling.

"Faced by this initiative which stinks of xenophobia, I want once again to express city hall's desire to fight all forms of discrimination, racism and anti-Semitism," mayor Bertrand Delanoe said in a statement.

The food handouts are organized by a nationalist group called Solidarity of the French (SDF). It says its "pig soup," which uses pork fat for stock, is country fare much loved by French traditionalists.

"No-one has ever been able to prove that anyone has been refused soup or clothes on the grounds of their religion or race," SDF lawyer Frederic Pichon told France Info radio after Tuesday's court decision.

"The skin of marine mammals, particularly whales, is a significant source of Vitamin C...which isn't found in either filet mignon or lobster, to my knowledge. The Inuit get their vitamin C from whale skin."

Ok.

Fascinating thing about this site how you always seem to find a competent answer to any question or request you address your fellow FReepers with!

I've never tried whale meat, despite the fact I've lived just some few miles from Norway (which is a great producer of that delicacy) for 37 years.

This foodie shortcoming of mine is ridiculous as you easily could take a day trip by car, train or bus to this particular neighbor country of Sweden. Naturally, there are several other interesting things about Norway than food.

Well, someday..

I don't have anything to base this on, but I'd be willing to bet that the number of observant jews seeking a free meal at a homeless shelter is disproportionately low, and the number of muslims is disproportionately high.

Base it on this.

So, no GMO/cloned/irradiated food kitchens? None, not even for the starving? OK, more for me.

Try the Harpoon Ale from Harpoon Brewery, Boston.

"I wonder what beer goes well with whale steak..."

Guess a domestic norwegian beer would just do the trick!

I've bought norwegian Ringnes beer (think it's the best selling beer in Norway) sometimes here in Sweden and I certainly approve of it! (regretfully Ringnes, today owned by the danish corporation of Carlsberg, does not have a website in english although they aren't anything like a small company. The Carlsberg Corporation is brewing a lot of decent beers, but their homepage is a really strange and higly NOT user-friendly one IMO. Couldn't find any info concerning Ringnes there at all, or am I at poor terms with danish internet-technologhy at large?).

However, there is an even better norwegian beer, but I've forgotten the name of and it no longer is available here in Sweden. Why, I don't know.

If you enjoy beer and are curious on Norwegian contributions in this domain, these sites might be of interest to you:

I am indeed a beer enthusiast, though my tastes of late have run almost entirely to top-fermented brews. I probably could enjoy a good pilsener, but I never get a chance because I've not yet finished enjoying all those delicious ales, porters, and stouts. Regionally this draws my interests primarily to the UK and Belgium, and away from the continent.

I like the big flavors that top-fermenting imparts, along with a strong dose of hops. Right now I'm jonesing on some Victory Storm King Imperial Stout.

Not for the faint of heart, this beer drinks like a meal. You don't really want a second one, or at least not right away. I find it rather overwhelming, but delicious, and immensely satisfying.

One differentiation between Halal and Kosher is that before slaughter, Halal requires the praying to Allah. Kosher does not require a prayer to God before slaughtering. My grandfather was a Kosher butcher who always went on about the excessive fees the "Kashrut Rabbinical mafia" would extract from butchers back when butchers were still slaughtering animals in NYC. They got a nickel for every turkey sold for Thanksgiving in lower NY state. That was big money back then.

And if you really want to know the WTO and new revised Codex requirements and standards for Halal and Kashrut and vegetarian certification and similarities and differences, try this book:

they lead with "Jews" and mention "anti-Semitism" as a cover. This is all about Pisslam. Nothing else.
Sums it up nicely.
