On this "National Day of Mourning throughout the United States," President and Mrs. Bush attended the funeral service for former President Gerald Ford at the National Episcopal Cathedral in DC today. President Bush was among those asked to eulogize (text and webcast at this link) his predecessor.

Henry Kissinger's eulogy was very informative about the international achievements of Ford's presidency. I've been looking for the text but haven't found it so far. If anyone does, please post it or link it on this Dose.

Goodbye, President Ford. Thank you
for your faith in Christ that helped bind
up and heal the wounds of this land
when we were riven and bleeding.

Actually, I think Susan looks like her father. She's pretty, but she has his features. He was a very handsome man.

Hey of I think one of great grandchildren look like Gerald Ford alot I saw this kid I think might be Susan offspring he is spitting image of great grandfather

I would have thought that instructions would have been issued as to what was expected to be worn though maybe they did not think it was necessary to say that dark coats are normal at funerals.

You know, that's a good point. I really don't know what protocol is but it would be fascinating to know. There are certain basic etiquette issues, but I can't remember if this is addressed specifically in anything I've read. I should see if I can find something about it.

I used to collect etiquette books from many eras...and thanks to my dad have quite a collection! It's been a long time since I dug any of them out...but I still can navigate my way through lots of forks and stemware. ;-)

Well in Britain it would be black suits and blacks ties for the men and if chilly a black or dark overcoat.

For the women black dresses and most would wear if a formal church occasion such as this black hats as well and of course black or dark over coat if chilly.

Those two little boys were Jack Ford's sons and Fords only grandsons. Michael has three girls and Susan has two girls. Here is a story about Jack and his sons: JACK FORD

A very heartwarming moment was when Jack teared up when his Father's coffin was being carried from the Cathedral and Hail to the Chief was played...one of many moments today.
