On this "National Day of Mourning throughout the United States," President and Mrs. Bush attended the funeral service for former President Gerald Ford at the National Episcopal Cathedral in DC today. President Bush was among those asked to eulogize (text and webcast at this link) his predecessor.
Henry Kissinger's eulogy was very informative about the international achievements of Ford's presidency. I've been looking for the text but haven't found it so far. If anyone does, please post it or link it on this Dose.
Goodbye, President Ford. Thank you
for your faith in Christ that helped bind
up and heal the wounds of this land
when we were riven and bleeding.

Money is not the issue. He probably didn't think about it, which is understandable.
Not to be sexist or anything...but maybe his wife was on vacation. ;-)

I just got the feeling Mrs Regan was able to get through those days because of him and his gentle strength.

Thanks SO much for the Dose on this day of mourning, and yet rejoicing, Gretchen.
My two younger kids reminded me that they met Gerald Ford when he spoke at an "Aquire the Fire" spiritual revival in Detroit.
We are fortunate to have had him so long in our company, and some day we will be in his company, together with our Lord!

That shows the respect that the President and Mrs. Bush have for the Catholic Church, unlike x42, who has presented himself to receive Holy Communion when he was fully aware that he should not.

That does look like Nancy Reagan next to the Carters.
Also to the left of Hillary I see Chelsea Clinton and Dr. Rice.

I'm sure it helped. He was VERY good at his job. Looked and acted his part...and performed his duties with great compassion.
The thing that impressed me about both the Reagan and Ford funerals was how well they echoed the Presidency of those they honored.
Ford really was an accidental President of quiet courage who was the right man for the right time...but not there by popular demand. His funeral was elegant, humble and respectful.
Reagan was a very popular President, who understood the role of pomp and circumstance as well as formality and tradition in American society. His funeral paid homage to those things, and yet it took time to thank the people who sent him to Washington twice by opening things up to the general public. It was a optimistic, dignified, proud and gracious.
It will be very interesting to see what the funerals of the remaining Presidents-emeritus. I half expect Jimmy Carter to carry his own coffin.

Yes, and also the presence of the Lord in that Catholic Church as well as in their own.

Tom B. said that President Ford called him last year and invited him to speak at the funeral Ah-ha, I didn't hear the "Ford" part, and thought he just said "The President" had called him so I wasn't sure if he was speaking about Ford or President Bush.

you can believe when clintoon goes he will hae the same type of service that Reagan had!!!
To: pollyannaish
Polly, I agree. The Reagan and Ford funerals were both reflective of the men. And GWB provided the forum and the respect they deserved. The pomp of the Reagan funeral, and the humility of the Ford funeral both brought me to tears.
I sure hope we are wise enough to elect future Presidents who have dignity and respect for their predecessors. I'm not sure we are -
To: speekinout
We have to believe there will be. I never thought there would be a President I respected as much as President Reagan. But there is.
There will be again. This is America. We can make it happen.
To: Kimmers
During Reagan's funeral? President GWB did.
To: GretchenM
Hi Gretchen. It's almost 7:40pm here in Los Angeles. Just got home from work, and wanted to stop by for a bit and say thanks for the Dose.
