Is there something cyclical, but nevertheless extraordinary, happening in American politics these days? Are we moving from a period of partisan confrontation and division, to one that values consensus and seeks more unity among our public figures?
Otherwise, how can we account for the unusual persistence with which moderates like Rudy Guiliani and Senator John McCain are holding their large leads in the Republican primary electorate? Or, the surprising surge of perceived-moderate Senator Barack Obama into second place in the Democratic field?
The conservative right is trailing ignominiously in the polls for the Republican nomination, while Hillary is tied with the combined vote share of Obama and Edwards in the Democratic field. Never mind that the Republican voters don't realize how liberal McCain and Guiliani really are, or how left-wing Obama's voting record -- all two years of it -- indicates he might be. The fact is, that moderates in both parties seem to doing very well.
In 2005 and early 2006, it seemed that the partisan divisions would continue and exacerbate. The right was energized by the debates over gay marriage and illegal immigration, and the left licked its chops after beating Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman in the Democratic primary. But Lieberman ended up winning, anti-immigration zealots like J.D. Hayworth lost, and moderate Democrats won most of the House seats that switched parties in 2006. The center showed new energy.
American politics, of course, alternates between periods of division and consensus. Because our democracy works, we explore new political issues and challenges through polarizing debate (such as would never happen in Japan, for example). After the debate has raged for a while, we come to a national consensus embracing the best of each side and move on (unlike Italy or France).

Yep, sounds like someone is scurrying to get back on the good side of whoever's in power.
Toesucker in '08'?
Is he looking for someone's toe to suck??
Dick morris is seriously in Hilliary's pocket, she is currently getting hosed in the polls.
He has to say something...
"...anti-immigration zealots like J.D. Hayworth lost"
Anyone with convictions is a "zealot".
Morris is doing his own "triangulation" for clients.
We got Clinton because of Perot's antics not because we opted for the left, IMHO.
The GOP nominee will be determined by the surge. If the surge succeeds, McCain will be the nominee and most likely win the election. If the surge fails, McCain is finished and it doesn't matter who the nominee is as the dems will have wrapped up the election.
In a way, it's a dilemma. I want Iraq to succeed, but I know if it does than it means that McCain is the next President. I don't know if that's a worthwhile trade.
Rudy has no shot. The chance of a pro choice, pro gay rights, pro immigration, anti gun, northeasterner getting the GOP nomination is zero, as in none, as in not happening.
"Morris trying to get back in bed with the democrats, as he thinks they'll win in 2008."
And he will be right unless Conservatives get off their butts and do something other then roll over. Morris is a commentator for the right. But he is a stretegist for the left.
They will welcome him back with open arms.
How did this toe sucking thing get started? I'd google it but I'm afraid of the results. Did he ever say he does this? Did someone who knows him say it? Is it a metaphor that took on a life of its own?
Who knows? Some on FR have little else to say about Morris other than calling him a "toesucker." Real imiginitive, eh?
Who knows?
Are you seriously saying you don't know what that is about?
Morris is half-correct.
The smarter Dems realize they can't win with a candidate who has an established voting record, so they trot out a candidate like Obama who they can claim is a 'moderate', only because he hasn't yet publicly taken a position on much of anything.
On the Republican side, it happens that the two candidates with the best name recognition at the present aren't from the more conservative wing of the party.
Morris understands something that too many others do not. That is, the special interest cabal that actually run this country, who buy and sell politicians by the bushel, always want someone in office who they can do business with. That is why he takes Hillary seriously.
