FORT WORTH, Texas -- Former Major League Baseball pitcher John Rocker is starting a campaign to encourage English-speaking Americans to start demanding respect from legal and illegal immigrants who do not speak English.
Rocker is also pushing for immigrants to respect the customs, heritage and culture of the United States.
In a news release, Rocker said the "'Speak English' campaign is to encourage people to promote and support the sustainment of the American heritage and the American culture. This campaign is in no way intended to degrade or demean the cultures or heritages of others' nationalities or races, but instead to bolster American nationalism and promote pride in the American culture."
To further his cause, Rocker is selling "Speak English" T-shirts on his Web site.
In the past, Rocker has been called a racist and anti-homosexual for comments made during interviews and drawn heavy fire from New York Mets fans after comments about the city of New York.
While in the major leagues, the Georgia native was a closer for the Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Rocker played his first major league game in 1998 and stepped out of baseball in 2004 to recover from shoulder surgery. In 2005 he signed with the Long Island Ducks and retired after 23 games.
Rocker's book is due out in 2008.

"To those supporting Rocker on this: He won't help you win the hearts and minds of others on this issue."
There lies the problem. It doesn't matter who the spokesperson is. The OBL will find fault and try to disparage any comments about the anti-illegal immigration issue.
One thing these people won't do is say why.

In any case, such a controversial figure is not going to be an effective spokesman. He should not even be considered controversial. Therein lies the problem.

What's wrong with that? I read that here every day, it's a description of a persons not at all unlike conservative christian, is it not?
He wasn't just describing him and better yet, he threatened him by saying the following:
'It's not over with you and me. Do you know what I can do to you?'
You would have to be ULTRA-PC, ala Al Sharpton, to find that one ofensive.
It isn't about what I find is offensive or not. Although I do and you should NOT say that to a teammate. Randall Simon found it offensive as did many of his teammates. That's the problem.
C'mon, mike, you are as bad as any NYT editor if this is the best you have, there is nothing wrong with any of these quotes.
There's a TON of things wrong with these quotes and defending Rocker is NOT what I would be hanging my hat on if I were you....
My God, people here complain about MSM bias, and here you are eating up thier pablum like a baby.
LOL!!! You're complaining about the MSM, while I'm saying the guy is a complete racist FROM WHAT HE'S SAID. He hasn't retracted one statement, he put out a semi-apology but did not retract any one thing he said. Maybe he's your hero or maybe you were a Braves fan or something, but he's a punk, he's an ass, he's a racist and better yet, he's OUT of baseball.

A pillowcase on his head? What do I have to fear from someone wearing a pillowcase on his head?

FA,
I've met the guy....
He's not someone I would want to claim on my side at all..... there is nothing about him that even remotely resembled 'conservatism'. He was disgustingly crude and base in not only his language, but his behavior and dress. And the setting was public, with families present. While a party etc, his behavior was out of line.
Like others, I thought this was a joke. With him on our side, we don't need enemies!
Damn, just those pants in daylight would make us all a laughing stock!

Ummmm maybe because Rocker IS racist, homophobic, anti-immigration, anti-anything-that-isn't-WASP....and it's a known fact by his own admissions...
Might want to provide the documentary evidence of this. Otherwise, you just sound like any other DUmpster diver.

If you don't have an inkling what that means, you are truly dense.
Good Day.

Read the thread. It's all throughout it. Whether or not you bother to actually SEE what is there is something I can't help you with.

Did you ever read what he actually said?
It sounded to me, like he'd actually ridden a NYC subway.

He should not even be considered controversial. Therein lies the problem.Do you want to fight THAT battle or win the borders fight?
He is controversial and a hugh and series number of people in the country have a problem with him. He's therefore a poor spokesman.
This is the same problem with Gingrich for President BTW. He's damaged goods. In a PR fight perception beats the underlying truth of the issue.
To: Always Right
Yeah,he did not include his muggings along the way!

His quotes are a yawn fest. My suspicion is that the words "racist, homophobic, bigot" fly out of your lips with practically no provocation at all.

Bingo! to you, sir.
Too many have bought the L/MSM's spin on his statements.
I think he's actually ridden the NYC subway.

We need to set up a debate between two Georgia politicians: Cynthia McKinney and John Rocker. I can think of at least one issue they would agree on!!
To: Rodney King
Why are you sticking up for this Rocker guy? He doesn't sound like a winner to me.

Well you'd be wrong. That's quite a common occurence with you anyway.

A racialist and a racist....ouch.....
What's the line on that?
This isn't worth it. These people are truly lost.
