WASHINGTON — Gerald R. Ford leaves his beloved U.S. Capitol for the last time Tuesday as the period set aside for ordinary Americans to say goodbye gives way to an elaborate invitation-only funeral at the awe-inspiring Washington National Cathedral.

As the first order of business Tuesday, Ford's remains were being removed from the Rotunda to lie in repose briefly outside the Senate before leaving the Capitol where Ford served as a congressman for 25 years. As vice president, Ford also had the constitutional title of president of the Senate.

J.C. Watts used that phrase a lot but not sure who said it first. It definitely doesn't apply to Slick or the Peanut Farmer.

I have Rush on now, but Roger Hedgecock is the guest host. Did I just hear him say that Ford's funeral was not a "funeral of the people"?

If so, what did he mean by that?

Brokaw was right when he talked about the horrible male fashions of the 70s. I worked at the RNC in the mid-eighties, and there was a portrait of Gerald Ford there which was a real 70s fashion festival. The tie was so wide you wondered why men even bothered to wear shirts as well. :)

I know I was thinking that when I saw Pres Bush take the oath of office in Jan 2001 and said a Thank you God.

I have no idea. Gerald Ford got exactly the same liturgy all of us get in the Episcopal Church. Maybe a slightly bigger turnout than most of us get, but the same service.

I have no idea what he could meant by that. I thought it was a lovely service. I personally like formality for something like this.

Maybe what I heard was that he was not a "President of the people"... If so, I understand what he was trying to say. Not elected, didn't aspire to this office, etc.

Thank you, Mo1, for starting and hosting the thread so we could fellowship on this occasion.

I can't imagine what it is like to say the Final Goodbye to a man you've been married to for 58 years. Very sad. May God continue to bless Betty Ford and her and President Ford's children.

I can't help but wonder what kind of a eulogy could be delivered for Carter. Did the man accomplish anything good during his miserable term in office?

And can you imagine anyone giving Slick's eulogy use the word character?

So NO to your question. Love us or hate us, you all left us, not the other way around.

Hey, I wasn't born until after the Reformation, so I didn't leave anyone.

See post #837. I'm assuming Miss Marple is Catholic.
