Greens Senator Kerry Nettle has called on the Federal Government to reconsider its decision allowing the Catholic Church to play a role in a new pregnancy counselling service.
The welfare arm of the Catholic church, Centacare, will provide advice to the organisation contracted to provide counselling.
The Health Minister has defended the decision, saying there will be safeguards to ensure pregnant women calling a telephone counselling hotline are not influenced in their decisions.
But Senator Nettle says she does not accept the assurances, given the Catholic Church's stated opposition to abortion.
"We have examples now where the Government provides funding to pregnancy counselling organisations run by the church and right-to-life organisations," she said.
"They have stipulated that they should provide genuine all-options counselling, but they don't.
"The Government doesn't have a track record that's any good at ensuring that people do provide genuine pregnancy counselling services."
If she had her way, abortion would be mandatory. In her case, perhaps it should have been...
Uh, then what's the purpose of the hotline?
I think he may have been paraphrased. We'll dealing with the ABC here!
my thoughts exactly.
