Progress in D.C. requires parties to move to center-Bush, Pelosi can be expected to find some common
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 1/1/7 | Carolyn Lochhead

When President Bush squares off with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi this year, don't be surprised if Mr. Conservative Republican steps left and Mrs. Liberal Democrat steps right, and the two wind up holding hands at more than one bill-signing ceremony.

Sure, there may be plenty of unfriendly investigations and vetoes littering the way, but the politics of a lame-duck president and a tightly constrained opposition Congress could make for some eyebrow-raising nuptials.

Recent discussions in the Oval Office have taken some surprising turns, say Democrats who have visited Bush there since the election.

"He's all into switch grass," said Rep. Ellen Tauscher, D-Walnut Creek, who co-chairs the moderate New Democrat coalition, describing Bush's fresh fascination with alternative fuels. Tauscher said Bush pointed out that he was the first president to acknowledge America's "addiction to oil" and seemed "very engaged and wants to move forward" on a new approach to energy.

Facing a Democratic-controlled House and Senate for the first time in his presidency, an unpopular war, and wholesale desertions within a Republican Party already looking past him to 2008, Bush stands at the bleakest point of his tenure at the White House. But analysts say he can find solace in history, which warns foes never to underestimate even the most down-and-out president.

Republican Ronald Reagan was mired in the Iran-Contra scandal and had lost control of the Senate at the same point in his second term. The arch enemy of the Soviet Union and architect of a massive military buildup went on to sign a historic nuclear disarmament treaty with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.

Democrat Bill Clinton defended his relevance after Democrats lost the House and Senate in 1994 following the collapse of his ambitious effort to remake the U.S. health care system....

The liberal press assumes that the Blue Dog Democrats that got elected will just follow Pelosi's lead. We'll see.

LOL

I can picture Pres. Bush sitting in a chair, petting the dogs by the fire, and Laura sitting at her computer, reading that article to him...and him laughing out loud!

The Senate and the House have decided they are the president. I am going to count on the man from Texas having a few cards up his sleeve. I sure hope so. And that he plays them.

I saw a bit earlier about Calderon in Mexico starting to sound like Harper in Canada and Howard in Australia. Dare we hope!

When was the last time you heard Bush say anything negative about Pelosi? Or, any democrat?

During the campaign in November.

He was raking Pelosi over the coals...

BUT, SOME Republicans and conservatives decided that since he wasn't perfect, and the GOP Senate and House wasn't perfect....they were gonna stay home, or vote some other party ...

TO TEACH HIM A LESSON!!!

Well...elections have consequences...and one of those consequences is that he now has to deal more directly with the DEMS, but that doesn't mean that he will do any different than he always has.

which is be the POTUS/CIC of ALL Americans, not just the GOP and conservatives.

I don't want him dealing with the dems...and the Lord knows that they mean nothing but harm, preferably impeachment or death most likely...

But, that isn't going to stop him from having the integrity of the Office of the President of the United States.

I don't recall that. Bush has been pretty wimpy here at home. I don't expect him to put up much of a fight against Congress.

We all know one thing for shure, he is salivating at the moment he can sign a broad amnesty for all those wonderfull people who are here to do the job Americans just won't do at $5 an hour. Pelosi sees future democrats and they will both get what they want.

Then tell him to forget amnesty and uncontrolled spending.

Yes of course he said hard things about dems. He called them the democrat party...drove them nuts. I did enjoy that.

The two things I worry most about now are that he won't take the cuffs off of our military and that he'll agree with the dems on amnesty, but he was not kind about their willingness to defend this country.

"The Senate and the House have decided they are the president. I am going to count on the man from Texas having a few cards up his sleeve. I sure hope so. And that he plays them. "

The President has never failed to fail to seize an opportunity to look and act in a way we would be proud.

Yes, Bah is right...he was the hardest on the Dems about their policy of cut and run...but, he was also critical of their economic policies of more taxes, or not making his tax cuts permanent...especially the death tax.

I am with Bah on this....those are the two things I am concerned about..and will readily admit that I disagree with him about...the PC war..and his immigration policy.

Unfortunately, even if he came out hard against any immigration..and a fence across the whole border, there are enough GOP Congresscritters that would veto proof a bill..

I know he is wrong on this..but, he isn't NEARLY as wrong as John McCain, and many other Republicans..and ALL dems.
