Why do evangelicals support Israel so strongly?

Why do evangelicals support Israel so strongly? Is the American Jews' fear of fundamentalist Christianity based on constitutional principle, or social and cultural snobbery and political partisanship?

A Match Made in Heaven is a funny, readable, book. It is the most entertaining way to struggle with questions such as "Why do evangelicals support Israel so strongly? Is their philo-Semitism just a front for their true purpose to convert Jews? Do the evangelicals, as their opponents charge, really want to use the Jews as cannon fodder at the battle of Armageddon? Or are they simply responding to the biblical commandment to love Israel? Finally, is the American Jews' fear of fundamentalist Christianity based on constitutional principle, or social and cultural snobbery and political partisanship?"

We will discuss these questions this week, and readers, as usual, can send their questions to rosnersdomain@haaretz.co.il.

How do America's Orthodox Jews relate to Zionist Evangelicals?

Joe Feld

Paradoxically, Orthodox Jews have the fewest problems with a Jewish-Evangelical relationship.

For one thing, a lot of Orthodox Jews and Evangelicals share conservative social and political positions. Orthodox Jews, for example, are rarely troubled by church-state separation issues. They send their own kids to parochial schools; they're glad to get government money via faith based programs; many are opposed to abortion, and they tend not to be too concerned about the good opinion of the "international community" - ie, Europeans.

Most Orthodox Jews also have a stronger connection to, and concern about, Israel than the secular or liberal majority. Orthodox Jews are more likely to care about a candidates' position on Israel. As a Democratic activist told me, if Cynthia McKinney ran for President as a Democrat, she'd get fifty percent of the Jewish vote.

Some Orthodox Jews are opposed to any

"All who accept Jesus Christ, that's who God's chosen people are."

Careful brother. Saying that God changed His mind is the same as calling Him a liar.
Read Calvin if you want to understand who the Chosen People are.
The Jews remain God's chosen people. I did not notice that He rescinded that decision.

Yeah, I need a lot of help, but doggone, you had to go and pick out Norwegians for Heaven's sake. Norge doesn't stand for a refrigerator :).

It was invented in the 19th century and is nothing but crap.

You can trace the entire Pre-Trib history from Margaret MacDonald to Edward Irving to John Darby to the 1878-1909 Niagra Conferences, to the influence of C.I. Scofield in the early 1900's (virtually taking over the Niagra Conferences as early as 1895), to the teaching at Moody BI, Denver and Dallas Seminaries.

From my perspective, I wouldn't say it's nothing but crap, however. The idea that Christ could come at any moment, sparked the great evangelistic and missionary movements of the mid- to late 1800s, bringing forth such organizations as the China Inland Mission, Sudan Interior Mission, The Evangelical Alliance Mission, all because of the concept of "imminent return".

"God chose Israel to spread the Gospel to the gentiles and to be the line that leads to The Savior. That's the meaning of The Chosen People."
Not according to God's Covenant with Moses.

" I'm no theologist, "
Is that some kind of politician?
You also are no theologian. Try reading the Bible before you deny the existence of God's Chosen People.

"Referred to as the "10 lost tribes" the House of Israel went over the Caucasus Mountains and settled Europe, "
Cultural anthropoligists disagree. The remnants of these tribes have been discovered throughout Europe, the MidEast and the Orient. They are all Jews.

G-d chose the Jews to be a beacon of light unto the nations of the world.

Who are you to criticize G-d?

As for the New Testament, Jesus didn't practices Christianity, now did he? Why would anyone want to simply worship the man instead of emulating his deeds?

Sure, he said that you don't have to... Yet, I don't have to help the unfortunate either. But I don't think anyone would then say that those that help and those that don't are morally equal, either.

One set of actions are simply more moral than the other.

"This is important because this is the reason the Jews are historically Democrats. THEY TRULY BELIEVE THAT EVANGELICAL CHRISTIANS WANT TO CONVERT THEM."
Liberal, cultural Jews believe this because they do not believe in the God of their fathers.

"They will .. but they are under a different covenant than we are. We have a better covenant made of better promises."
So God's Covenants are qualitative, to be ranked from less valuable to more valuable?
Certainly not. God's Covenants are absolute and for all time.

"I believe that the "Left Behind" series is a great work of fiction"

"I agree with you there."

I do not agree. It is drivel, trash, poorly written and intended for those who value cheap grace, a preponderance of so-called Christians, if sales are a measure of approval.
I find nothing of Christ in the series. It is demonic from beginning to end.

Great article.

Each day we should thank G-d for our Christian friends. Their support helps keep Israel safe and together, we have built the great cultural heritage of western civilization; both godly and rational.

>Because if you have no consideration for Gods covenant with Israel (Jews), how can you have proper consideration for Gods covenant with Christians?

Thanks for your comments. Having read the bible, I'm still learning people's perspectives on these issues as are we all. I still have my doubts, but its an issue I'll look at more closely.

I have read the bible. But you haven't answered my question. If God refuses salvation to those who deny the divinity of Jesus Christ, how is it that God's "chosen people" will qualify according to this rule?

Bingo.

In light of America's total moral degradation over the past fifty years, our support for Israel is the only thing keeping God from erasing us from the planet.

But do a search of your Bible and NO WHERE is there a mention of it. First off the word isn't ever used, but the word has become part of modern Christian lexicon.

The event of the rapture is recorded in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17. So the rapture is mentioned in Scripture.

The word "rapture" is derived from the Latin "rapio" which means "to seize quickly" and is merely a term used to describe the event mentioned above.

The word "Bible" is not to be found in the Bible, but that doesn't negate it's existence. Just like in Noah's time, when people refused to believe in the impending flood because up until that time it had never rained, people today refuse to believe that portion of Scripture that records God's getting His people off the scene before He sends judgement because they, in their limited minds, cannot conceive of such a thing happening.

God has done everything He said He would do from the time of Genesis to the present, and He will complete, and in fact is in the process of carrying out, His plan for the end of this age.
