The death toll for U.S. soldiers in Iraq has reached 3,000, a number that's both unbearable and, compared to previous military operations, a pittance.
War can make poets. The British World War I soldier Wilfred Owen had lived as a minor disciple of literary giants until he was thrust into the abattoir of Europe's cataclysmic war to discover the brutal theme of his art. "Nor is it about deeds, or lands, nor anything about glory, honour, might, majesty, dominion, or power, except War," he wrote. "My subject is War, and the pity of War." The war invested meaning into his words, giving them a dark significance that still evokes heartbreak.
But can war provide similar meaning to a number? What can now be derived from reaching the grim milestone of 3,000 American dead in Iraq? The public's contemplation of the number should have little to do with the right or the wrong of American occupation, nor with the viability of that seed of peace America is meant to be sowing there. Wars are always paid in blood and numbered in lives lost, the value of that sacrifice doesn't rise or fall like penny stock depending on the popularity of a mission. The 3,000th death is as the first dying being the pitiable but inextricable consequence of war.

No need to bash you. You make very articulate and excellant points. I agree completely.
No he is right. The Boomers took their moonbat ideas off the campus to the top of national leadership, then will bankrupt medicare on their way out. In no way have they kept the ideals of the greatest generation alive and vibrant.
You can't possibly be that naive can you? 1000 murders every year in LA county.
I would like to see a post that has some basic figures --all together on one post--of various death figures for the US per year/ or 3year period. Then I would have a ready made index card to hand to the next Maroon Lib that gets off on quoting "3000".
This would help my stress level in dealing with the jerks. ha.
I would say you are dishonest by adding sectarian violence to us solder death rates, which is the article in question.
Here's the FBI's yearly Uniform Crime Stats for murder for 1999-2003: http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius_03/xl/03tbl2-9.xls
Hope that helps. If not, Google 'FBI Uniform Crime Statistics' and you'll find everything you need.

I spoke with a real loony antiwar activist by phone today. She sounded drugged out on something, and told me that both her computers and 3 satellite TV boxes have been mysteriously fried either by the government or her ex-husband. She claimed that all her equipment was fried by "firewire" even though there is nothing connected to it. She told me her fondest desire is to move from Mendocino County CA to "some foreign country with warm beaches" and told me about 37 times that she publishes an ANTI-WAR! website (also meat is murder) and that is why the government continues to persecute her. I kid you not. They are certifiably insane.
Awesome. thanks!
It's your tax dollars, but I'm glad to help. Go kick some...
The Centers for Disease Control maintains the official mortality statistics for the U.S. They are available on their website which will pop up if you Google "mortality statistics". Unfortunately, the tables are posted as PDF files, so its not easy to cut and paste, but its all there.

Absolutely! This has been boiler-plated for months .. they've been salivating to print it.
God bless our brave and awesome troops!! We can never repay them for their devotion and sacrifice.
It's 'dishonest' to paint all of Iraq with what's going on in the Baghdad and Anbar provinces, considering that over 50% of all terrorist attacks occur in those two provinces, out of 18 provinces.
But does the MSM care? Noooo...
And I see you've been zotted.
This is over a couple of years. We lost nearly 3,000 in one day and that began it all.
drive-by media are ghoulish idiots.
When American losses are put in perspective (e.g., twelve American deaths per day at the hands of illegal aliens, tens of thousands per year due to auto accidents, murder, etc.), our troops, their families, W and his administration certainly have been making a lot of good choices regarding the GWOT in the last five+ years.
OTOH, it would appear a large segment of the American populace hasn't steeped itself in sufficient truth to see the realities of this current conflict.
