What's the term for that?I'm not sure exactly what the term for that is. I would probably use the word heresy but I doubt that's the correct term.

What's the term for that? Surreptition?
Infiltration?
Dissention?
Churchsplitting?
To: Don Joe
It's just a suggestion with no ambiguity implied. ;-)
We have a couple in our small group that insist unbelievers should never be in a Sunday worship service. Nobody else in the group agrees and we've asked for biblical support. So far (weeks) nothing in regards to biblical support. From what this couple tells us, they are not alone in their believe so I'm curious... how many people hold this belief and why...

Addenda to #780: To do otherwise, i.e., to "split it off" -- would smack of Delphiesque "steering". ("Let's NOT let THIS stuff get on the table, or we're screwed! Say a kind word about it, suggest it merits further study, and then GET IT OUTTA HERE! Tell them to start up a separate meeting in a separate room -- and get someone in there to keep an eye on 'em!" :)

Nothing of the sort implied! I think it's a worthwhile topic. I'd start the thread but my work day is ending and I'm heading home...

Alright, let's try this one more time. Purpose Driven Church is a method. Can everyone say that? Let's try, here goes, "Purpose Driven Church is a method". There now, we each get to keep our Pastors and we each get to use our own curriculum. Isn't that nice. And, Rick Warren gets to stay at Saddleback as long as his church wants him and he won't be interrupting our services. He wasn't even elected to represent us, he just graciously and capitalistically, in a fine Calvinistic tradition, made a method that was successful for his church available to other churches, and, he didn't force it on anyone who didn't want it. Now there are reports that some church leaders forced it on their own innocent, unsuspecting members who didn't have enough votes to overcome the "seeker sensitive" juggernaut, but that seems like it is the problem of the local church and the asleep members while the method advanced, not the Evangelical Pope's" fault.Nope, not having any of that nonsense.
- Communism and Fasciasm were just methods of government, just like monarchy, Republics, and Democracies.
- "Winning hearts and minds" is just a method of fighting a conflict (yeah, that worked out real well in Vietnam and Iraq) </sarcasm >
- Abortion is just another method of birth control.
- Do you get the point yet?
The purpose driven church was a collection of heretical views, and blasphemous ideas concerning the church and worship service (of course interspaced with some legitimate teachings and ideas).
All this hoopla concerning Warren's
political faux pas mean absolutely nothing to me. They are symptoms, not root cause.

The house of God is for those who haven't found God yet. The Christians are called to assemble together. Not the pagan.

I made an observation, to a person of like mind.
Interesting that you think expressing one's opinion about the tone of the comments here is considered to be "extremely judgemental", but so be it. I stand by my observation.

What it boils down to is that the "new gospel" is one of "fellowship with unbelievers", which is heresy, period, full stop, end of discussion. That would make Jesus an heretic. He fellowshiped with unbelievers all the time. So do I including inviting and driving them to my church with the "purpose" [there is that nasty word again] of them coming to Christ. You know what, it works!

I think I do. It's like;
A church's liturgy is a worship method.
Prayer meetings are a method for the church family to bring the needs and praises of the church in a united way to the Lord.
Lecturing is a teaching method.
Small groups are a teaching method.
Graded classes are a teaching method.
Identifying giftedness of church members is a service method.
Training church leaders is a leadership method.
Training members in having daily devotions is a maturing method.
Providing areas for service on a regular basis is a missions method.
Accountability groups for members is a personal growth method.
Greeters at the service is a welcoming method.
Regular fellowship gatherings are a method of building up the church family.
12 step programs are a method for the church to provide Christian support groups for recovering people.

Warren's method of silencing critics is suspect. Small group ministries can be used for edification and spiritual growth. But they can also be a perfect set-up to get everyone on board the ecumenicism train to universalism, U.S.A.
The real problem with Warren are the doctrines within his methods -- or more accurately, the lack of them.
"Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry." -- 2 Timothy 4:2-5

You are very perceptive. My wife and I believe our church is slowly heading this way. We may be lucky in that the movement dies out before it reaches critical mass at our church.

He supports mantras (a.k.a. breath prayers, contemplative prayer, etc.)
He mentions them in PDL (Practicing the Presence of God section) and has also endorsed several Catholic mystics on pastors.com (Nouwen, Merton and etc.)
