#131, good point.....
If only Pres Bush were that eloquent.
Just one teeny change.
Shall we leave it at mixed LOL
The Doctrine of Overwhelming Force did apply when we invaded Iraq, and we did indeed have overwhelming force. That's why we took Baghdad so quickly.
We won.
Just like the Ethiopians just did in Somalia.
And just like the Ethopians are finding now, and we've been finding for almost three years now -- there are TWO kinds of enemies. The regular and allied forces of a state or confederation, and the highly irregular meltaway forces of tribal associations and religious sect madrassas.
NO AMOUNT OF OVERWHELMING FORCE WILL WORK AGAINST SUCH MELTAWAY IRREGULAR FORCES.
We, the US of A, however, damn well do know how to fight and beat such forces. It takes a long time, and requires national persistance -- but it can be done. We did it against the Indian Tribes. It took 250 or so years.
What are the techniques? Some we already employ. Set tribe against tribe, sect against sect. That lessens the cost to us. Technique employed by Cortez, Jackson, many others.
What should we remember and do again in this war?
Educate the tribes in our laws and religions. Ban the hate-preaching sects and madrassas. Force tribes off their lands into reservations. Shut off the source of sustenance to them -- in this case that is oil. That is, take over the oil.
Now this batch of Arab Muslim Tribes and Jihadists is different than the American Inidan Tribes, yes. But there are many similarities, and as I said we know what worked before. In the New World, in the American Frontier, in the Phillipines. Use those war wisdoms.
Be Bold and Have Courage!
If Carl Rove is such a genius, how come he threw the financial and political muscle behind the nomination of Arlen Specter without extracting any concessions from him in return? Politics isn't about "I'll give you everything and you'll give me nothing." It's about leveraging power and money and making deals. The Bush administration seems to think it's about being nice to your political enemies in the hope that they'll appreciate it.
#146, by George I think you nailed it. They are afraid that Killers will actually take 30 minutes to die and have to suffer like their victims did before they Murdered them.
I plan to be an active phoner to their offices -
Not that I have heard of yet...
That sounds like the way the Clintons are reported to have treated their subordinates. The "champions of the little guy" are usually the most arrogant elitists.
I escaped CNN late edition though as MTP was over he flicked the channels over and the closing credit were coming up on that - be grateful for small blessings.
***Have I missed something? Who's complaining?***
The every-half-hour "news" segments by ABC/CBS/etc include one or two voice clips of people objecting to the hanging. I do not believe that the broadcasts are "balanced" by any voice clips of persons supporting the event. I guess that in the "news"writer's perspective, the simple reporting of the event is the pro side of the "balance." which has to be "counterbalanced" by objectors, but not by supporters.
#150, she may be covering all bases, but be right for 2007. 2008 is another story, any of Mccain's opposition will just show all of his "nuttiness on Parade" tapes, and describe how his McCain/Feingold Bill, and other legislation directly hurt Conservatives, and he will get his butt beat. McCain takes a lot of time Visiting Venues where Veterans hang out, and they like him, but as soon as they know about the Viet Nam sellout with John Kerry they dump him.
They have nothing but contempt for the "little guy." The Bushes and the Reagans, on the other hand, appreciated their staff and were and are well liked by them because of it. When I heard that Carter's mother said she should not have had children, I thought it was quite harsh. I mean, he was her child after all. Now I understand it.
I agree.
Ummm...if we could actually unleash our overwhemling force it would work.
As it is we are engaging the enemy with one hand tied behind out back and a patch over one eye.
The rules of engagement for my fellow soldiers on the ground needs to be changed.
