Democrat-controlled Congress takes over
Sunday Herald Sun ^ | 31 December 2006

DEMOCRATS assume control of the US House and Senate on Thursday with President George W. Bush's policies on Iraq and the "war on terror" weighing heavily on their agenda.

Public discontent with the Iraq war was a major factor in the Republicans losing control of Congress in the November 7 legislative elections, and the issue will be first on the agenda of the new majority.

Incoming Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Joseph Biden has already said he would oppose any effort by Bush to increase US troops in Iraq as part of a new war strategy.

“If the President proposes escalation in Iraq, I will oppose him and so will many of my colleagues in Congress,” he warned last week while admitting that his powers were limited.

“We don't get to make foreign policy in the US congress,” he said. “We get to try to shape it.

“And it's a vehicle that we can use, if done well, to help shape a consensus that will put pressure on the President.”

Indications are the Democrats, who regained control of both houses of Congress after 12 years of near-domination by the Republican Party, plan to fully use their newfound clout.

All I can say is that I'm glad I'm not there... 1 of the main reasons I left the states... (foresaw the evil ones coming to power 8 years ago)...

Looks like we're all gonna be learning a lesson all right. Never, ever for any reason whatsoever allow a RAT to gain power.

Doesn't sound like the RNC has learned Jack Cheese to me, Jim.

The RNC has no one but themselves to blame for this one. No one at all.

Hey, it's not the RNC that's going to be suffering. It's us.

many of the millions of H1bs already in the US are nearing or at the end of their 6 year visa. with the limits lowered to 65,000 (from 350,000) by GWBush in 2002, many want these people to get new visas.

dems can't wait to push the H1b limits higher... meanwhile, there has been talk of a different kind of visa where anyone with a degree can come in, with no limitations on duration or quantity of people.

i guess a resurgence of the tech employment sector over the last 6 months needs to be solved...

If the Democrats want to believe this simplistic (and wrong) explanation of their gaining control of Congress then they can be as surprised by the truth as they were in '94 when they also thought that they had a mandate from the voters in the '92 election to take the country to the left.

The new Congress is set to be sworn in on Thursday and Ms Pelosi, the first female speaker of the US House of Representatives, has planned three days of concerts, church services and fund-raising events around her swearing in.

Cult of personality, anyone?

Hey, it's not the RNC that's going to be suffering..

Sure they will. All those K Street lobbyists are going to find their checkbooks have become remarkably difficult to open when in the presence of Republicans.

The Republican 'leadership' is going to have to start paying their own bar tabs.

Oh the horror....the horror....

Remind me to feel pity for the RNC in about 18 months when they finish ramming McCain or Guliani down our throats because they're 'electable'.

Then be sure cover my back when the RINOs on the forum tell me it's my solemn duty and sacred responsibility as an American to pull the lever for another RINO and if I don't it means I hate God, Country, Mom, rosy cheeked children, puppy dogs, kittens, and Apple Pie....

I just hope that Free Republic doesn't also suffer. I can never thank you enough, Jim Robinson, for the existence of Free Republic, and I'm sure that I also speak for the majority of Freepers and the majority of lurkers as well!

I couldn't care less for the RNC per se, but I do care about the damage that's about to rain down on our country under rat control. RINOs my arse. Brace yourself. You're about to mounted by a herd of full blown Marxists.

How many of us really foresaw in 1998 that George W. Bush would actually get the GOP nomination--and win?

With two years to muck things up and expose themselves to the electorate, just maybe the Democrats will be prime beef to be served up for a so far unknown GOP meat eater.

I couldn't care less for the RNC per se,

You really should. They're the fools 'running' the Party.

but I do care about the damage that's about to rain down on our country under rat control.

As do I. It's a damn shame there's no real opposition to them. Who do you suppose we can blame for that?

RINOs my arse...

IIRC you were pretty harsh on some of them RINOs yourself Jim. I'm reasonably certain you had some rather choice words for McCain and Bush after CFR.

You're about to mounted by a herd of full blown Marxists.

Once again I must ask, who do you suppose is really to blame for that? My Repub Rep won, albeit in a race that was far closer than it should have been considering it was Hydes old district. But I think the point still stands.

You may not care about the RNC. Fine. It seems they don't care much about you, and by extension the entire conservative wing of the party, either. What is one to do about that?
