House speaker may not seat certified winner in disputed race (Pelosi may cheat FL-13 voters)

SARASOTA — Incoming U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is considering not seating the state-certified Republican winner of a contested congressional election when the new Congress goes into session next month, her spokesman said.

Drew Hammill, a spokesman for Pelosi, said the congresswoman has not yet decided what to do about the contested District 13 race, in which Republican candidate Vern Buchanan was certified the winner by the state by a margin of 369 votes over Democrat Christine Jennings.

"The bottom line here is that nothing's off the table," Hammill said.

The House is currently investigating, and Jennings has pressed on with a lawsuit against the manufacturer of the touch-screen voting machines she insists malfunctioned during the election.

I know others think that the Republicans would take it lying down. I don't buy into that. It wouldn't totally stop the Congress, but it would make it clear that there will be no honeymoon. That's what I feel, anyway.

I recall when Mr. Newt talked about the earlier episode, how angry the GOP members were with Bob Michel, who after watching Panetta cheat, saw he'd left votes at the bottom of the box just sort of shrugged the shoulders and played the Minority Leader role to the hilt, walked over and congratulated the new (cheatin') Dem, shook his hand. Mr. Newt said that day was when the others really understood just how far Michel's party loyalty would go, or not go rather, over and above "comity in the House." When Dick Cheney left to be DefSec and the post of Minority Whip opened up, Mr. Newt won it, in part because of that little episode. I hope these later GOP members will have this told to them and will NOT allow comity to be put ahead of decency, but it remains to be seen.

The machines showed that more than 18,000 ballots were cast in Sarasota County without a choice in the congressional race — an "undervote" rate 10 percent higher than in surrounding counties in the district. Jennings has sued machine manufacturer Election Systems & Software Inc. to gain access to machine programming source codes to determine whether they malfunctioned. A state audit of the machines has not produced evidence they malfunctioned.

10% higher than surrounding counties. That doesn't seem statistically significant but I'm sure we can find a judge who will consider it significant.

Although I completely cannot fathom how Pelosi has the power to "decide" not to seat the state certified winning candidate, but I would say that if she does such a thing she'd better consider consequences should Senator Johnson be unable to return.

What does this have to do with whether or not Johnson recovers enough to remain in the Senate? The Speaker of the House has no power whatever to decide votes in the Senate. The fact that the balance may shift in the Senate has no bearing on the majority in the House.

Maybe, but they're still Democrats......which means they'll watch their crooked 'leadership' and do absolutely nothing, nada, zip, zilch, bupkus.

"Jennings has sued machine manufacturer Election Systems & Software Inc. to gain access to machine programming source codes to determine whether they malfunctioned."

Correction: Jennings has sued machine manufacturer Election Systems & Software Inc. to gain access to machine programming source codes to determine possible means for future election fraud.

We can only wish; history ain't on our side, however. Remember Bob Michel, the former House Minority leader who never wanted to "make waves"? Wouldn't play at the country club.

"The Democrats are going to show the Republicans how to use political power. "

Sad, but true. I'll predict the GOP will get control of Congress the day they show us (the rank and file) out here they can play ball instead of checking in their testicles when they show up in Washington.

My gut tells me it may be awhile.

I think greenpeas meant that if Johnson dies, and meanwhile Pelosi has refused to seat this congressman, then the rats will have absolutely no basis for castigating the Repub. SD governor for replacing Johnson with an R.

Nothing's off the table? OK...if Buchanan isn't seated then Republican House members boycott all House business.

Tim Johnson Update Comforting news from Brendan Johnson, the son of Sen. Tim Johnson (D-SD):

The news media might spend time talking about successors to Sen. Tim Johnson, but a son of the South Dakota Democrat is confident his dad will go back to work.

"That's the easiest question for me to answer," said Brendan Johnson, the second-oldest child of Tim and Barbara Johnson. "From my conversations with the doctors and based on the progress he has been making, I feel very confident that he is going to be getting back to work sooner rather than later."

It was the first interview given by a Johnson family member since the senator was hospitalized Dec. 13 with stroke-like symptoms followed by brain surgery at George Washington University Medical Center in Washington.

I'm somewhat familiar with Sarasota County because I vacation there just about every January. It's makeup truly makes it "Heaven's Waiting Room" and it's *the* place in this country where you'd most expect to see an 85 year old drive his/her Buick into the front of a 7 Eleven because "the gas pedal malfunctioned".

Given what I know,I can clearly see why there could have been some kind of "undervote".

Democracy is for we the people, not the rented suits who the people temporarily put in there. If bob Michel did that, he put comity not just above Republican loyalty, but loyalty to principles.

Pelosi is showing her true colors, very early.
Partisanship and power above all else, including bedrock principles of democratic elections. This is an absolute and utter outrage and should people to get up and throw the bastards out.

For the Democratic party in the democratically-elected House to defy democracy like that is the lowest level of hypocrisy there is.

Write a letter to the editor. Tell them how wrong this is and how mad we are that they would even consider it. Tell the GOP House that they need to walk out and boycott the entire House proceedings unless and until the rightful winner who was certified is seated. They cannot let this travesty continue, and - gosh darn it - the GOP is mud-dumb not to pick up an issue that is a sure winner like this.

Exactly! You'd think Johnson's delicate condition would keep her perhaps a bit more respectful?

I doubt she cares what the Senate does. Why should she care if Johnson lives or dies? I understand that it might be easier for her to get her bills through Senate with a Democratic majority, but as long as she passes bills in the House, she will be able to brag about getting things done and then blame it on the Senate being to partisian. I don't think she gives a thought about Johnson. It was nice of you to think that. You must think she is a nice woman...sarc.

Sounds as if Speaker Pelosi wants to ruin 'bipartisanship' right from day 1.

To Democrats, the word "bipartisanship" means

An era of "good feeling" in Congress, during which Republicans meekly co-operate with the nastiest, most loud-mouthed, most left-leaning Democrats.

You may be correct, I think the next 2 years will show how many DINO's there are. Anyway, I expect the left wing moonbats to be more angry at their DINO's than our anger toward the RINO's. The hate filled leties were living everyday of their lives since January 20th 2001 to see President Bush impeached. After they suffered so many defeats at the hand of President Bush and the GOP, they were able to finally score a small congressional victory but to no vain. President Bush will not be impeached, the democrats do not have the votes. The left wing loons will be angrier than ever.

Steny Hoyer won't let her do it.

Always remember that Nancy Pelosi may be Speaker in name, but Steny is Speaker in fact.

From his perch as Majority Leader, he will control her every move. She will say anything she likes but Hoyer will control what she does.
