The US Navy has formally announced it currently plans to retire CV 67 Kennedy (plus some other ships) from its active ship registry by 30 Sep 2007. However, this could still change.

I don't think it wise to forego such an aircraft carrier while facing our immediate future.....in fact, I think it is downright stupid to do so.

Was this your ship?
its diesel powered, keeping it fueled at sea is a huge headache. it will make a nice museum in Hyannisport.
We should break it up for scrap and then use the scrap to build a new nuclear carrier (CV 67 was not nuclear). We could name the new carrier the USS Richard M. Nixon. That would really make the 'Rats in congress s**t in their shorts.
The USS Kennedy, as an oil fired aircraft carrier was obsolete before she was built.
November 22, 1975 70 nautical miles
east off Sicily, Italy
USS JOHN F. KENNEDY and USS BELKNAP (CG 26) collide in rough seas at night during air exercises east of Sicily. The overhanging flight deck of the carrier cuts into the superstructure of the cruiser setting off fires on the BELKNAP which are not controlled for two-and-one-half hours on account of frequent flarebacks.
Because of the presence of nuclear weapons on board both ships the commander of Carrier Striking Forces for the Sixth Fleet sent a secret nuclear weapons accident message (a "Broken Arrow") to the Pentagon, warning of the "high probability that nuclear weapons aboard the BELKNAP (W45 Terrier missile warheads) were involved in fire and explosion but there were no direct communications with the BELKNAP at that time and no positive indications that explosions were directly related to nuclear weapons. An hour after the Broken Arrow message was sent the USS CLAUDE V. RICKETTS (DDG 5), alongside the BELKNAP fighting the fire, reported that BELKNAP personnel said "no radiation hazard exists aboard".
CVN 77 is slated to be named George H.W. Bush. I wonder if there is some liberal interest in always having a boat named after Saint John. I would be willing to make that trade if it means that we never have to put up with a USS Clinton.
Isn't the Navy retiring the Kitty Hawk as well?
I know the new carrier George HW Bush will be coming on line soon, but is there another bird farm that'll come into service soon to take the place of the Kennedy?
My God, the Navy hasn't been this small since around 1938. Isn't that right?
USN is now down to 279 ships....
Actually, its worse than that. It hasn't been this small since before World War One...
Bravo Zulu to that!!!!
USS President Clinton... but the navy does not commission brothelships.
Pretty misleading to go by numbers of ships rather than tonnage.
I thought the USS Kennedy was steam-powered.
BTW, Fueling at sea may be a "headache" now...with hardly any oilers left in the fleet as it continues to implode under not-so-benign neglect...but it used to be routine...and we had it down pat.
Respect the Office. All men are flawed, some more than others.
It's Steam powered, but the boilers run of Diesel Fuel Marine..
Rather than Nuclear Reactors.
