The US Navy has formally announced it currently plans to retire CV 67 Kennedy (plus some other ships) from its active ship registry by 30 Sep 2007. However, this could still change.

Even more misleading when you don't take technology into account. Modern ships are faster and accurate at longer ranges; I like big honkin' guns as much as any red-blooded American, but if I want to put a load of hurt in the bad guy's shorts at long range, give me a cruiser loaded with Tomahawks over a battleship.
Not only was Nixon a Naval officer, but he also out-ranked Kennedy.
Yes, he was. Saw a photo of him in a Time-Life book; Time photographed him as part of a photo essay on veterans returning from the front, coming through a door (of his law firm?) in his Navy blue dress uniform.
Got any good Rickover stories?
LOL. "No need to go to the shelter, Ahmed, those planes are from the USS Kucinich."
"USS Ex-President Clinton."
How about the USS Disbarred Impeached Ex President Clinton?"
One bit of lore has it that in Nixon's first congressional campaign, he sometimes wore that same uniform at appearances; not because he was trying to appeal to veterans, but because he couldn't yet afford a second good suit and the one he owned was at the cleaners.
I have to disagree with you on the Point that the JFK should not be decommissioned. The Kennedy is If I am correct the only oil fired carrier in the U.S. navy. As a result it's very expensive to maintain and keep fueled. CVN's are more expensive but they can cruise around the world with their Reactors for 20 years before the Nuclear fuel rods need to be replaced.
Fine.
Where is its replacement?..........not there, it it?
So you want to take its mobile runway and 80 aircraft out of the fleet? AT THIS TIME, WHEN THE STORM IS GATHERING?
Yep, it was my ship. As a plank holder I feel very old.
Yes, and Nuclear Carriers are steam powered
If the U.S.Navy has decided that are going to decommission the JFK,they are doing it for a reason,It cost to much to run.
The Navy is cutting ships left and right trying to prove they are underfunded to Congress who pays their bills.
Whether I want it decommissioned or not does Not matter. What matters it what the U.S. Navy requires to keep it Carrier Battle Groups afloat on the sea.
KITTY HAWK CV-63 {her senior by three carriers} is still active and is a conventional.
Sorry about that but I thought the Kittyhawk was decommissioned months ago,Like last spring.
This was and still is the first aircraft carrier I ever visited. I was TDY as an Air Force type in San Diego. We went over one afternoon when they had open house or whatever they called it in the Navy.
It was a memorable experience and I still remember how awed I was.
She's next on the list 2008. The Navy still shows her there http://www.nvr.navy.mil/nvrships/details/CV63.htm KITTY HAWK out lasted her class and the JFK as well. The only other ship between their age still active when KH goes will be ENTERPRISE CVN-65.

Yeah. You know enough to be ignorant. Perhaps you think everything can be airlifted into you. Not surprising. Sprinkle some pixie dust on it, and you and your boys will magically have your tanks and supplies.
But one dimensional thinkers like you are always wide eyed in amazement when, gee golly, operations go down the tube because there is no logistical support. You don't have enough common sense to think things through, then when your ass is in a sling, it is the fault of someone else who didn't plan for it. It is never the fault of geniuses like you. And being as self-centered as you are, you never think for a minute that what anyone else does is as difficult, dangerous or as important as what YOU do.
You are the last person I would want on my team.
I have a lot of respect for people who have to take the territory. But I don't have respect for people who think they do it all on their own, whether in or out of the military.
We have been fortunate, nobody has been contesting contol of the sea lanes. But only ignoramuses will take that for granted.
You are exactly like those people in between WWI and WWII who didn't see the need for a large Navy. Fortunately, for our country, for the most part, grown-ups plan and run operations, not "unintelligent self-centered buffoons" such as you.
That's the way it always is. Some people have to do the mental heavy lifting for those who are incapable of it. Usually, as in your case, thanklessly.
Well stated indeed.
No, they're decommissioning her because she's too worn out to keep in service. During the 70's and 80's the Navy undertook a series of major overhauls called Service Life Extension Programs (SLEP). This was basically a 2 plus year rebuilding of the carrier. The JFK, being the newest, was the last to be scheduled for a SLEP and when her turn came they cancelled it and did a less comprehensive overhaul instead. As a result, the last I heard the JFK couldn't operate fixed wing aircraft because her catapaults and arresting gear was unsafe. In order to bring her up to snuff it would take two years and hundreds of millions of dollars that the Navy just doesn't have.
