KUWAIT CITY Is it religiously acceptable for Muslims to wish their Christian colleagues or acquaintances a Merry Christmas? In Kuwait, it depends on who you ask.
Days before the holiday that is not officially celebrated in this small oil-rich state, fundamentalists like Mohammed al-Kandari began urging fellow Muslims not to extend the greeting to Christians they know.
Al-Kandari, who heads the Society of Sharia, or Islamic law, told Al-Watan daily the celebration contradicted with Islam because Christians believe Jesus was the son of God.
The decline in tolerance of other faiths comes as political Islam is sharply increasing its presence in mainstream politics across the region.
Kuwait University political science teacher Ahmed al-Baghdadi said posters expressing sentiments similar to Al-Kandari's appeared around campus for several days. "It is dangerous because it means that the extremist movement feels stronger than before ...maybe in the future they will call for closing down (non-Muslim) places of worship."
Senior Shiite scholar Mohammed Baqer al-Mohri issued a statement saying Muslims can "congratulate their brethren the Christians" on Christmas and "show joy" on the occasion.
"Let all Christians in the world know that all Muslims love Jesus ... and his mother Mary," just like the holy Quran tells us to, al-Mohri said.
The government is fighting extremism with a campaign to spread "moderation" especially among young men, many of whom have adopted fundamentalist Islam and taken up arms in Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq.
On Christmas Eve, Al-Watan columnist Nabil al-Fadhl urged officials leading the campaign to make a concrete gesture to Christians.
"It is a silly joke to try to preach moderation .... if you do nothing about those who fight Christmas and describe as infidel

Why should we waste time making nicey to Muslims, when they are so obviously prejudiced and bigoted? Spare me the guilt trips.
Should we expect a Merry Christmas when we are in a Muslim country at the time?
I wouldn't expect it except from some friends if I was in Kuwait.
I dont believe anyone who comes to America to live permanently should think that they are not going to become Americans. By that I mean obey our laws join our culture and speak friggin English.
If they are here for a visit I dont give a damn what they believe.
But if they wish to live here permanently the head scarves should come off the turbans should come off, English should be spoken . While in their mosques they can do as they like, but outside they become Americans, the ay it has always been done.
You dont see Greeks here wearing tights, or Scots wearing kilts except on special occasions. Even the japanese dont wear Kimona's on the street.
Join us or get the hell out.
Some Christians say they don't give a flying flip what some Muslims say.
MERRY CHRISTMAS, y'all!!!!
Muslims. Tolerant? HAHAHAHAHA!
Brings to mind that song from South Park
I heard there is no Christmas ,
In the silly Middle East.
No trees, no snow, no Santa Claus,
They have different religious beliefs.
They believe in Muhammad,
And not in our holiday,
And so every December,
I go to the Middle East and say,
"Hey there Mr. Muslim,
Merry f (beep) king Christmas ,
Put down that book the Koran,
And hear some holiday wishes.
In case you haven't noticed,
It's Jesus's birthday.
So get off your heathen Muslim ass,
and f (beep) king celebrate."
It manages to insult everyone at the same time.
Cheers!
...oh, and (for real) Merry Christmas!
They're Muslims. Thats a given!
Fear Hell! Its packed full of Muslims!
Why are we wasting our soldier's blood and taxpayer money on these people?
This isn't a story about Muslims in America. This is about Muslims in Kuwait.
Many on this story have said they should assilimate or do as the Romans. Since this story is about Christians in a Muslim country, should the Christians expect a Merry Christmas.
Naw - don't expect a Merry Christmas in certain Muslim countries. Expect only an "Allah Akbar" as the suicide bomber triggers his paradise device.
