SIOUX FALLS (AP) The condition of Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., remains unchanged as he recovers from brain surgery in a Washington, D.C. hospital.
He remained in critical but stable condition Friday, said his spokeswoman, Julianne Fisher.
Its likely he will spend Christmas and his 60th birthday on Thursday in the intensive care unit at George Washington University Hospital.
One of his doctors said earlier in the week that Johnson was being sedated so he can rest and recover from bleeding in his brain and that it would continue through the holidays.
He was diagnosed with arteriovenous malformation, a condition that causes arteries and veins to grow abnormally large and sometimes burst.
He suffered bleeding in his brain Dec. 13 and underwent emergency surgery that night.
May he recover soon and his family find strength in this difficult time.
"rest and recover from bleeding in his brain and that it would continue through the holidays"
So what is it that will continue thriugh the holidays, the bleeding or the sedation?
I wonder if any Senators in history have gone a whole Congressional session without casting a single vote.
Harry will find a way to get him to vote.....

sedation.
Senator Clinton will channel him.
Meanwhile, South Dakota continues to have only one Senator capable of meeting for a caucus.
Maybe they can send Tom Daschle back in as a substitute.
Yes. Carter Glass of Virginia (1858-1946) didn't attend any sessions from 1942-1946 because he had many illnesses of old age, and never resigned his seat.
I hope he recovers, but if he doesn't , then the Dems will somehow get his votes to count....

I wish people would quit using this statement. Trust me, this guy has already gotten plenty of rest. He does, however, need to recover and heal. I pray that he does.
Don't know...doesn't sound good.
Translation: He's in a medically-induced coma, most likely intubated and on a respirator, and his hands are bound to prevent him from pulling out the breathing tube. Yes, he's ready for the next session of Congress. < /sarc>
I am not aware of any that never voted, but there have been some that have been comatose through sessions. Hell, there's one from W Virginia who I think got elected and is really dead.
Prayers that he return home soon, fully recovered.
Yeah, I hear comas can be very restful (presuming you ever get out of them).
"In 1972 the Senate Republican Conference stripped Senator Karl E. Mundt of his three committee assignments. Mundt, who had not appeared in the Senate since suffering a stroke in late 1969, had been ranking minority member of the Government Relations Committee and second ranking member on both the Appropriations and Foreign Relations Committees. Among the forty-five Senate Republicans, Mundt ranked third. His poor health prevented him from seeking a fifth term in the Senate."

Oddly enough, Karl Mundt was also from South Dakota.
