Murtha wrapping up a momentous year (Barfer)

For U.S. Rep. John Murtha, it’s been an exhausting year.
The Johnstown Democrat won a bitter re-election campaign, then lost a hotly contested race for House majority leader and, by his staff’s count, made 157 appearances on television and radio.
But the 74-year-old, formerly known as a behind-the-scenes political player, has no intention of slowing down as long as the war in Iraq continues.
“Until we get the troops redeployed, I’m going to continue to speak out,” Murtha said. “I’ve operated very differently than I normally do, but I’ve had to.”
Murtha’s public stand against the war, and his criticism of the Bush administration, is by now well-documented.
However, the impact of his words was not clear until last month’s elections, when Democrats won control of both the House and Senate.
Time magazine last week characterized Murtha as “a lonely voice that became a chorus.” And the congressman is not shy about touting his role in this year’s elections, claiming that he has “changed the direction of the country” in regards to Iraq.
